engine and drivetrain Transmission Identification

Found this Transmission today in a boneyard. They told me it is out of an '83 e21. There are two sets of casting numbers - 242.0.291.01 5.4 225 (tail section) & 242.0.325.00 1.1 225 (inside bell housing). Any help would be appreciated.

It looks like a 4speed out of a e21 but most likely from 77-79

those numbers you list are not part numbers

just mfg. casting numbers

clean inside here and reveal the production date

month/year which will narrow it down

Thanks for your replies. I did find these stamped numbers ( 015766AK ) on the top of the bell housing. Do you think these would be an indication of the date?

Usually it's in a small circle of dots - smaller than a penny. But that sure looks like a later tranny - slave cyl mounting is the clue

The yard also said this may be out of a european grey market car.... I'll look for the date markings you described.

I'm going out on a limb in saying its a 4-speed tranny from the 323i or 320/6....

Grab a tape measure, the bell housing dimensions should be similar to these.

Andrew, looks like the trans in the link you provided but the measurements are different then the image above. They are as follows. 10.25, 4.75, 2 3/8 & 4 1/8.

It looks like a M10 bell housing to me. The bolt spacing for the M20 engine at the top of the block is closer together than this one looks. plus it has the hole for checking ignition timing.

Nice chart, thanks. I should be able to identify the tranny based on the information there. I'll compare and get back with findings.
