which is the same as 4th in the 4sp in my 2002.

Does this mean that the 318ti 5sp a close ratio and not an overdrive?

Did BMW offer any other 5sps on the E36s?

Ray,  Current BMWs, 1973 BMW 2002, Turkis, and 1997 BMW 318i 5sp avus blue.  Drove a lot and sold over the years, in reverse chron.

     1997 m3 coupe silver, 1998 318ti red, 1996 318ti red,

     1973 2002 Agave, 1971 2002  GM brown

The ratios for the M42/44 motor are wonderful. i don't know if 5th is 1:1 but it's definitely not an OD box. My e30 318is has the same box and it uses a 4.11:1 rear end. From what I have read, it's not the perfect box, but it's pretty good. It needs an adaptor plate to fit to the M10.
