I'll bet there are far fewer left than anyone thinks.mac.

I certainly agree with this: rust, wrecks -- I parted out a totaled '72 in '74 -- and mechanical issues -- for many years, a worn tii was worth $500, and no one was going to rebuild an injection pump -- have taken a huge toll.

So why does it feel like there are always a couple dozen tii's for sale, in the U.S. alone? Is there some general ratio between the surviving numbers of a model and the number of that model currently for sale? For example, are 5% of the survivors for sale at a given time?

Just curious as I'd like to know how many survive.

According to info I have collected,

model '71

1971 = 422

1972 = 2797

1973 = 1302

model '73

1973 = 794

1974 = 2133

1975 = 1

Model '73 was made up to Dec '74, however, it appears one sneaked out in Jan '75.

 As for the high survival rate, some of it has to relate to owners' desires to restore the Tii models more readily than the standard version, in spite of the cost, in anticipation of greater returns down the road - both seat of the pants and financially.

I believe that the tii's have a higher survival rate than non-tii's, for the reasons you cite. But I don't know, and no one here has yet offered, the actual survival rate for non-tii's or tii's! How does it compare to other cars produced in the '66 to '76 era?

We have the tii (and non-tii) registry but we don't know how complete its numbers are.

bnam,

I made some "logical" assumptions, which is dangerous ..... there's a few pieces and parts stamped with 6-74 ......

I'll take another look and see if I see anything that says 7-74 ......

Cheers,

Carl

It's so easy to get the facts from BMW Archives: send an e-mail to Andreas.Harz@partner.bmwgroup.com with your VIN and ask him for the car's history. You don't have to guess.

Trying to chart the survival rate for any group of cars is mind-numbing, partly because there will always be cars out there that we do not know about, which throws off the numbers. I have been doing a registry for a British-made sports car since the mid-70's and new cars pop up out of the blue at random, even though we have been searching for them for decades now. Aarrggh.

 so, you learn something every day ...... I found a sticker, with both VIN and MFG DATE, affixed to the driver's door ..... sheesh, I haven't noticed that sticker in decades.  (fyi, the sticker is that self-destructive, perforated stock, silver in color).

 MFG DATE  =  7/74

 And I just sent an email to Andreas Harz .... thanks much for that contact info !!

Cheers,

Carl
