Did u pull individual plug wires and start?

Will you make an audio file and post it?

Am I typing for my own benefit? :-p

I tried that, but the problem is that as soon as the motor spins for a few rotations and pressure builds the sound is gone. I'll try to remember to get an audio file tomorrow morning.

I'll type slowly for you :-)

If you pull a wire and then start the car, and the knock is then gone, that would be the offending cylinder. If the sound is not gone, replace the first wire and proceed to the next wire. Rinse, repeat. Therewith you can perhaps isolate the issue. Or not.

Boy, you guys type way too fast! :)

I think Federal Mogul has a webpage of bearing pictures.

If no-one has posted it in a while here is a great resource on reading rod and main bearings:

Engine Bearing failure analysis guide
Clevite 77 Issue
Form # CL77-3-402
www.cleviteonengine.com/publications/CL77-3-402.pdf

Also see the updated Web version with more photos than the pdf version (beta V.3)

More to the point, oil pressure is fine, CR is low, so maybe piston slap on start-up. I'd have thought chain tensioner loss of prime would create rattle as chain hits side of upper cover, not a knock.

If only there were technology for an audio clip.
