One of them (Voll Cabriolet by Baur) made it into the Letters section of the current Roundel!

Yep, the 2002F was a running gag perpetrated by the late--and sorely missed--Harmon Fisher.  He started it years ago (back in the late 70s-early 80s) by stating that the factory was gonna start building a modernized version of the 2002, the 2002F (the F was for Fisher, of course).  This gag went on for many years, and generated a number of letters to the Roundel asking where one could send a deposit for one.

A few years before he passed away, I found a dollar bill in circulation whose serial number ended in 2002F; i sent it to Harmon with a note indicating that this had to be the magic down payment for one.  He got a kick out of it and was amazed that I remembered the gag and actually spotted the bill's serial number.  Harmon was a great guy--very involved in restoring WWII aircraft down in his native Louisana.  I'm sure some of our Louisana bretheren have even more good Harmon stories...

Great replies all, but what I meant was what is the rarest 2002 today? I know turbos were a very limited run, but there seems to be quite a few around still. One-off cars can't really count as a production run.

And the Dianas were ti's. Les, an 1802 is not a 2002, close though.

Colour (re the Turbos) does not a model make.

So the question is, what is the rarest 2002 variant in the year 2013. I.E., the fewest survivors.

FWIW:

All of the Targa models were 2002s and only 1,963 were produced.

That number has been disputed, but it is probably close to the correct figure.

I don't know if anyone knows how many of those survive, but we are working on that in Baurspotting, at least for the survivors in the US, for now.

The Voll Cabrio (at 200 to start, who knows how many left)  may be a hard number to beat.  Do you consider the RHD version of the Baur Targa Cabrio to meet your criteria?

People that have been Turbo owners a lot longer than I have, including the "2002 Turbo Owners Club" have not accounted for even 500 of the original 1672 cars world wide. I would guess the % would be about the same on the Ti's, cabs etc.

1970 1602 (purchased 12/1974)

1974 2002 Turbo

1988 M5

I'm surprised that the 2002 Alpina A4S hasn't come up.  Yes, it's based on a tii, but still a factory production original from Alpina.  I'm not sure the production numbers, but I'm sure there are extremely few original cars surviving today.

Dudes, one word... Diana

There were only 12 made. I think maybe 3 are still know to exist. I consider them to be a special enough edition to qualify. So, what's the second rarest 2002 variant?

Ah, I almost completely forgot about the one and only 2002F! I haven't heard that name in a LONG time! What a character! Please don't make one of us old BMWnospaceCCA members explain the 2002F...

What about those lost then found 2002MT's, there were only 25 of those... ;)

Ok Tom and Don, you cracked the door open. Stories please. I think BMW may still award the Harmon F award for originality at their Oktoberfests

Heheheheh :-)
