1974 BMW 2002 - Runs great, Daily Driver, Automatic, lots of extras - $6000

Hi, I am listing my Sahara Beige 1974 '02 BMW automatic. I get a "thumbs up" almost everyday from someone, including today. I've had it for 2 years. Her name is "Sarah the Sahara." It is a great car, the only reason I am selling her is because my wife doesn't feel comfortable driving it, and that was part of the general idea of getting the car in the first place, that she would be able to drive it when we needed to swap cars. She's not making me sell it, but it's not as practical for us in the way that we need it to be sometimes (we have two active kids, with friends to haul around, etc). I also drive it a 100 miles a day right now, and that's just not the type of driving I had originally planned for this car and doesn't seem fair to it, but it does quite well on those long runs and in stop and go traffic, etc. I am also open to partial trades to a newer BMW like an e21 or e30.

It is currently registered and doesn't need a smog ever in the state of California. It was garaged most of its like but it has its fair share of patina for being almost 40 years old. It was always a California car. Back in May of this year, i got a full tune up, valves adjusted, etc and had compression checked which is at 160 across each cylinder. You can tell when you drive it, the engine is extremely healthy. It hauls. I hope someone doesn't want to just buy it and swap in a 5 speed, but I can't control that once it's out of my hands, so just make me think otherwise when you're test driving it.

It is mostly original, the guy I bought it from owned it for 36 years, he bought it when it was a year old. I have a TON of paperwork for it, most of it from the previous owner. The previous owner was a Hughes space engineer that lived in Manhattan Beach. He worked on engineering a plastic material that would hold up in space. The car still has his Hughes parking permit sticker, as well as a beat up AAA member sticker. I kept them on there because they are kind of cool. He did transfer the title to his daughter because he became unable to drive it, but she didn't really do anything with it except drive it every once in a while to keep the juices flowing, technically I'm combining them as the second owner together. I have the original blue plates, but they are not titled on the car right now. What happened is he got handicap plates, then his daughter took control of the car, and asked to put the blue plates back on, but someone at the DMV checked the wrong box and sent her new plates. She called the DMV and they said "sorry, too late" and she never tried again, she had an extreme appreciation for the car, but was not an enthusiast. When I got the car, I tried to do it when I took ownership, but they said I had to wait 3 years and the story they gave as to why sounded completely crazy, but anyway, I have lots of old registration cars and the plates if you want to work on getting them back on there. We can talk more about it when you come to look at the car. The title is clear.

I have lots of extra parts:

- extra radiator

- extra Frigiking AC unit and console facia, etc.

- I have the original wheels, but it is currently on e30 bottlecaps that are in excellent condition.

- It has the original radio (not totally original, BMW's didn't some with radios but it's from 1974).

- I also installed rear shoulder belts to satisfy my wife's concerns for the kids, but I did NOT mess up the rear deck, I made a new one since the bolts go through, so the original rear deck panel is still intact.

- The door cards are uncut.

- The dash has no cracks.

- extra rear windows

- headliner is mint

- new alternator a few months old

- sun shades in good condition

- back seat restuffed

- i have the original badges, but bought some plastic ones for temporary

- Water pump is a year old (did it as a precaution, I didn't know how old the other one was)

- I have an AC bracket to convert to newer rotary compressor but never got around to it.

- spare kidney grille

- passenger seat in awesome condition, driver seat is totally fine to drive with but could use some help

- Set of recaro seats for an additional $1,000

There is so much more the car, history and parts, I can't think of it all. Feel free to ask me questions. You can email me, or call me at 310.eight49.two42four. I will take pics asap. Thanks.
