tisalover: Thank you, thank you and thank you again for sharing that story and pictures! Pic no:3 reminds me of keeping my pen handy.

Just wish that more of the pictures were in color. And I think I´ve got enough stuff to keep this topic running for a while. But Photobucket

keeps sending me emails talking about "traffic" and "money"......

And how about this grid for ya.

....yes a great source, probably the best source ever, you can select years, photographers, events and so on....I started my research last year and I saw every picture of every year and race, also the motorcycles. There are 160000 pictures! in the archive.

The pictures are incredible.  For the 4 cylinder cars the competition must have really been even, high compression pistons, 324 cam ..... until the injected cars came along and even then, most were probably using AlpinA or Schnitzer slide throttles on the 8v motors.  Whomever built the best motor that hung in there until the end won the race.  Of course once the twin cam motors were allowed (1973) all bets were off, if you weren't running a Schnitzer 16v or a M12 you probably weren't going to be competitive.

Whatever your source is it is awesome.  If there are any more of my AlpinA Gr. 2 car hidden away post them up (or send them to me).

Tx

Brno 1975

Andersson, many thanks for posting that up (along with the other great shots), the blog I started back in o9 had the same intent as this thread, with all the images you have posted I am certain you have surpassed my blog posts (on the historical images anyway).  My records suggest this race was May 18, 1975 and I am pretty sure AlpinA retired the car after this race - it broke (again).  In this race it lost a connecting rod.  Funny I was just over at my engine builders today looking at progress on the motor - he has the crank up in the block now - off to the side i noticed the steel windage trays which are being re-made.  Those windage trays look like an ancient hand hammered artifact.  My guess is that when that conrod let go it probably damaged the crank, pan and anything else in the way including the windage trays.  Thanks again for posting, would love to have the originals minus the print info.

Well, after a little more research, this car, posted in an earlier picture, was called the Tobin Special and was said to have a BMW engine.  Still looking for the driver of the car and an actual picture of the engine.

I like the factory hammer clipped in at the front of the engine! For the knock-off hubs, I suppose. Or for day of race fender flare adjustments :)

Great stuff here!

Andersson:  YOU ARE THE MAN!  Thanks so much for posting that link to the Tobin Special.  Can't wait to share this with my dad.  He was a teenager at all of the street races in the Glen between 1948 and 1952.  He will be pleased to read the history on this special car and know that it is alive and well!  I wouldn't put it past him to try & get it here somehow for the Vintage Festival we have every year.  I know the picture below is not a BMW, but interesting none the less.  It is Sterling Moss in the pits at the 1960 USGP at Watkins Glen (the inaugural race at the Glen).  Still need to get to the International Motor Racing Research Library in Watkins Glen to find some pictures of 2002's that raced here in Trans -Am during the early '70's.
