That ring story freaks me out a little, I keep my ring on when I work on the car, I know guys with more experience and/or sense than me say you should always take your ring off, guess I know why now.  I do like to put the quick cut off switches on the ground of my battery, just makes it easier to follow the rule of disconnecting the battery when you work on electrics or near the posts.
