Just put a deposit down on this 49k mile Bavaria in NH. Agreed-on price: Four grand. Saw the car last week. Not only isn't there a rust hole anywhere on the car, there's not even a blister.

Hats off to the Hack, amazing part is how you do it, regular maintenence on your stable would keep me buzy all year long. How is the Lotus doing, quite a thrill for this old veteran to see you building one. I remember checking the Bavs out and looking at those twin carbs wonderin how I could mount em on my o2, now I want to drop the whole shebang in a vintage truck.

A rust- free Bav is like a rust- free 2002- it's not zero rust, it's just rust lite!

Nice.

I always thought that was a very pretty, understated sedan.

Excellent! Good luck with it. Awesome car!

When I bought my first '02 in Dec of 1972 (a brand-spanking new Sahara), the dealer had a beautiful, low-mileage used Malaga Bavaria on the lot, which he offered to sell me at the same price as my 2002.  I was tempted to bite the Bav bullet, but at the time, the only way I could get a car loan through the Credit Union was if it was a new car.  Got the '02, loved it . . . the rest is history.

Enjoy the Bav.   "Drive it hard, put it away dry."

Thanks all.

Marshall, the Europa was number seven. The 318it slushbox for my son was number eight. The $3000 running Z3 5-speed with 138k was number nine. The Bavaria again puts me into the nosebleed section of double digits. The guy, who also has four 02s in various stages in restoration and decay, has the car in a warehouse in southern Maine along with eight boats. The car is currently on a lift, so I could walk beneath it, photograph it, look for rust. The ONLY rust on this car is some light surface oxidation on some floor and frame rail sections that'll clean off with a Scotch Brite wheel.

But one of the things that made me pull the trigger, in addition to the remarkable condition and price point, was the fact that he's letting me keep it in the warehouse 'till spring.

Looks like a great find! You are a lucky man, indeed.

I came very close to talking my dad into getting a new '72 Bavaria for my mom, but she over-ruled both of us in favor of..........a Pontiac(!!!).

When these cars were new, I got to drive a few of them at our local BMW dealer, when I had my '02 in for service. Truly one of the great cars of that era and I've always been surprised that they never seem to be considered to be collectable. I mean, there are 02s seen "everywhere", in restored or resto-modified form, but rarely do I ever see a Bavaria. Sort of like the NKs, I suppose. Great car with inexplicably non-existent club network/support.

Hopefully, they will become "loved" again before they become as rare as the NKs have. Or are they already that rare?

Me too!   My dad test-drove a demo '72 Malaga Bav (4-speed manual) which I was thrilled with.  The dealer kept lowering the price in tiny increments, but my dad wanted a big discount. The deal never came together.  Dad bought my mom a  dark blue over burgundy leather '73 Volvo 164E instead. (still pretty good, but not a Bavaria)

Like my Lotus Europa, I didn't necessarily buy it because I thought it was about to become collectible, but like the Europa, I always wanted one (or in the case of the Bav, another one), I did sense an uptick in values, and I thought if I passed on it, the window of opportunity would close and I'd be unlikely to find an opportunity like it again.
