Paid $3000 for the Inka gangster and put about $5K in parts into it. It came looking the way it is except for the wheels and a little elbow grease buffing the paint.

In October of 1975 I purchased 2374367 for 6300 plus tax. Sticker was $6870. I bought it from my parents neighbor who was the dealer here in Staten Island. He saw me massaging my 1965 1800NK in my parents driveway almost every other day and took pity on me. He gave me a deal on a new car I couldn't refuse. About $500 bucks off. I scrounged what money I could and borrowed the rest and bought the car. This car is literally a shell of its former self. I am still torn as to what to do with it. I hate to send it to the happy hunting grounds because of the sentimental attachment I have for it but it will probably be a cold day in hell when I break out the welder to fix the rust. But as long as I have a place to keep the shell I'll keep it. Who knows, maybe it'll become worth restoring if I keep it long enough. I'm a long way from Rob's eight car rule.... Or was it nine?

I purchased Jims 1975 sahara 2002 for 7250.00 It had a 198,000 well kept miles. The car was in very good mechanical condition. It had a fresh engine rebuild. Very few issues. It came with complete maintenance records and a nice 5 speed transmission that I don't plan on putting in until this 4 speed wears out. Jim and I agree it was a good deal for both of us. I looked for a good 02 that was in my price range for a little over a year.

I would say I'm definitely doing it wrong. The Malaga donor I also bought sight unseen. I was offered the engine for $800 or the whole car for $1000 and he would tow it an hour away to my shop. Only one or two poor pictures of it I found here on an old classifieds ad. The engine came partially disassembled and looked like it hadn't run for a few years (also true). It took me a weekend to find all the parts and figure it out. Started right up. Nothing like the other one...nearly took thirty minutes of cranking and playing with the throttle to run.

Not too much salvageable from the Malaga. I took the whole drivetrain and front subframe (now wishing I had just done engine swaps. Less broken bolts that way). I had planned on using the 328i radiator but found it welded to the nose. Really?? I think it was still worth it though. I got some wheels the Miata guys will probably love to buy, the drivers door is much better than the other and a few various trim pieces are great.

Yes, when Andrew and I first met at Vintage at Saratoga 2011, he said "oh, you're the guy who dissed my car on the FAQ!" I couldn't imagine what I'd said. I went back and found the post. I'd said that I found it surprising that a tii had gotten bid up to $15k on eBay without photographs supporting the claim it was rust-free. Andrew explained that he'd had off-eBay conversations with the owner and the mechanic who worked on it, and photos had been exchanged that supported the rust-free claim.

I love it when I'm wrong.

I traded the Tahoe in May 2013. The CL ad wasn't very descriptive but when I saw the photos I had to have the Golf Yellow. The owner didn't mention "sunroof" which was a bonus for me living in the Central Valley here in Cali. We swapped titles because he needed a family sized vehicle (read: 5 people) and the 2002 sat in his garage for no particular reason. Don't think he was an enthusiast. On the drive home from Reno NV (young son rode along to see why his dad was so hot to run to Reno on a hot day just to look at a car) we lost the center resonator due to rust and drove the last 150 miles with the front windows down, sunroof and wings open, listening to the tank sound resonating beneath the floor.

Tahoe value was roughly $4500, 4X4, 167k miles, 2nd tranny, various repairs needed though none were going to cause a major breakdown.

Golf Yellow has rust @ front turn signals, front valence, rear fenders behind wheel. No shock tower or floor board rust. Car was kept mostly in Nevada after purchase Dec 21, 1971. One trip to Europe (based on records) via PO military service. 61,200 on odometer when I picked it up. Replaced exhaust (resonator back), refreshed carb (32/36), refreshed 4 speed rear seals, guibo, driveshaft balance and ujoints replaced, swapped euro turns, momo steering wheel, bottlecaps, HD rear shocks, IE stage 2 springs, upper strut bar, removed front spacers, new motor mounts etc. So far these basics have cost me less than  $2k. Slowly gathering parts and info for dual 40 Dellortos, cam change, head work, high compression pistons, 5 speed etc. Suspension bushings all need replacement along with ball joints, steering box, pedal box, clutch master/slave etc.
