Spare Tire Size

I have a '73 tii - can't imagine tire wells are too different.  The OEM 185/70/13 is too large; the trunk floor will not fit flush.  I used a 165/70R/13.  Local tire people could not find one, but Tire Rack sourced a  Vredestein for next day delivery.  While it will likely never see the pavement, it fits well and is a functional spare tire.

The car didn't originally come with the 185/70-13, thus the fitment problem.

There are two currently-active threads on this issue. I responded to the other one!

(You and I provided the same answer, John, but it took me more words to say it! ?)

Best regards,

Steve

Old? Probably. Original? Somewhat less likely. What brand is the tire? Is it a U.S.-spec car? The 165HR13 Michelin XAS, made in France, predominated on U.S.-spec ‘02’s from ca. 1969, as an option ordered by Hoffman Motors on most of the ‘02’s they imported. For the 1974 model year, the tii got a 165HR13 tire as standard. After BMW NA assumed the sole importer role in early 1975, the 165HR13 became standard equipment across the board.

A few other tires were employed as original equipment, perhaps when there were supply issues with the Michelin’s. But these were generally made-in-Germany Continentals. I believe there were also some European-made Uniroyals.

Does your tire have a D.O.T. date code (3 or 4 digits in an oval generally)? If so, it’s from the early 1980’s or later. If not, then it’s really old, but I cannot see the brand name. Tire wear indicator numbers, on the sidewall, begin in the mid-1980’s.

Regards,

Steve

I like the raised floor like the turbo, it presents a great lowered space at the rear of the trunk for a tool box etc and does not  take away any space.

I’m  in the early stages of raising mine, it’s quite simple to do and a very effective way of overcoming the larger spare issue.

I think it is original spare, but not 100% sure. It is US spec car and rolled off assembly 3 days before your car (vin:2742702)

Brand is TIGOR, RADIAL, TUBELESS, 165 R 13 82 S, MADE IN YUGOSLAVIA. Found this number: 127495

Mike,

I’m not convinced that’s a manufacturing date.  Before 2000, DOT dates were unambiguously 3 digits (WWY). After 2000, they were 4 digits (WWYY).

Best regards,

Steve

I’m convinced that this tire is not original to your car, old as the tire may be. The brand name is Tigar (a Yugoslavian company purchased by Michelin in 2007). In 46 years of continuous ‘02 ownership, I’ve never heard of a Tigar brand tire associated with a new BMW ‘02. Further, and importantly, every U.S.-spec 1976 came with 165HR13 radials, not “S”-rated radials: the “H” rated radials were standard equipment for most of the 1975 model year, and all of the 1976 model year.

I have photos of window stickers from nine 1976 models: all clearly show “165/HR13 STEEL BELTED RADIALS” as standard equipment. All nine window stickers also reference a $9.75 “FEDERAL EXCISE TAX ON TIRES AND TUBES”, consistent with the tube type XAS’s delivered new on my ‘76. The Tigar is tubeless.

So you’d have to argue that BMW said, “Screw the standard 165HR13 Michelin XAS we’ve promised on the window sticker, let’s outfit 2742702 with an unknown brand of tire. No one will notice if one 1976 car gets “S”-rated tires in lieu of “H”-rated Michelin XAS’s!” ? My VIN 2742541 was delivered to me new with five 165HR13 Michelin XAS’s, tube type, now all long gone. I would have raised a big stink if the dealer had tried to give me five 165SR13 Tigar tires!

I will admit that, with molding nubs intact, your tire has seen little or no use! And I will admit that this tire has a story to tell. It even looks as if you could complete a set of TG 505’s if you’re not worried about tire expiration dates. ?

Finally, I will ask, “Does anyone else here have Tigar tires they believe to be original on an ‘02?”

That’s where I’m at this point.

Regards,

Steve
