I am getting ready to send this beast to get painted + Body work.  I wanted to do some of the removal of things to hedge off expenses.

Question:   How and should i remove the holders that keep on the silver trim?

how do i remove the lower brackets for the black trim that i want to delete all together?

What is this rubbery bumper hole stuff do i need it removed?

You can use an ice pick or nail set to pound the pins out of the center of the trim clips. Some have used screws so they could pull the center pins out to reuse them.

The rubbery stuff is a kind of caulking. You could remove it and reapply something else after paint, or clean it well and leave in place.

I would remove them - your body man will thank you if he doesn't have to work around them. Plus its best to get the holes painted.Maybe think about replacing worn ones. I would remove the side marker lights and have the holes filled. Are you having front/'rear windshield removed?" Good idea.

Thats the thing Bill,   i was thinking about leaving the top set for the aluminium brite strip.  Less risk of damaging the paint after by trying to add them back in.   Plus they will be covered anyway once the i reinstall the shined up aluminum.

The lower definately going to delete.

Hans: Yes am having side markers deleted.   Not sure what that part is all about, no bulb.

The cars came with reflectors as well as lit rear side indicators, depending on the year.

Have them (or you) remove the plastic lock strips front & rear.  That will allow them to get the rubber gasket away from the body so they can get some paint in there.  Then you can fuss with installing the shiny new strips!

that is a bit scary....a body/paint shop that can't do glass or does not have a connection to a glass specialist?  yikes.

I'd rather not have them training on my car. I had to hunt around for someone who was familiar with old BMW installation.

So yes, remove the locking bead strip, and maybe put some cord under the rubber to hold it out from the paint. They'll need to clean under there.

What Bill said! ^....he beat me to it.  One trick is to over drill the holes before painting to allow for the thicker paint, but this takes careful planning.  I just used a round file and removed the paint in the holes for the new belt line trim clips after the car was painted.  Then I painstakingly went all around the car and prepped the bare metal in each and every hole with rust preventative (at least two coats)....you won't see it any way!  Then the new clips went right in without issue.  It's the little things that make the difference, and you'll sleep better nights knowing you did things right! :-)
