1975 Bmw 2002 Head

I believe the E21 heads only appeared with 49-state '76 models. All '75s and CA-only '76s retained the E12 heads. An E21 head in a '75 car (check the casting date on the head, it's near the "E21" mark) might indicate multiple things, e.g.: a '76 motor replaced the original motor (check the engine number to verify it matches the car's VIN); an E21 head replaced the E12 head. If the latter, the replacement of an E12 with an E21 could relate to the pistons installed in the motor, or it could have been accidental or unknowing.

I say all of this simply because an E12 head is much easier to find than an E21 head. There were simply more of them produced during the 2002 era (E21 heads were also used on the early e21 models, i.e., 320i, but those heads are not drilled for mechanical fuel pumps). Are you certain you need an E21 head? onlyvanagon/ wmass has had a brand new E21 head for sale, $600, (I'm butchering both his usernames, sorry), which you could probably find by searching the Parts for Sale listings.

Yes I have a brandy new E21-2.0 head in box from Germany depot. Can be bolted to 2002 block with FLAT top pistons. Am also told that A good machine shop-one that knows BMWs inside and out can slightly modify the E21-2.0 head to fit onto 2002 blocks with NON flat pistons. Do your own research. Priced at 600 dollars plus shipping. Head located in Amherst Mass. 925-322-3424.

Sorry. I, erroneously, assumed you were looking for a head for a '75 model year car. But that's not what you actually said: you're looking for a '75-dated E21 head. Your head, dated September '75 (9 out of 12 possible bumps surrounding the "75"), is for a '76 model year car. (Anything dated after July '75 represents the '76 model year.)

If you're looking for a replacement E21 head, new or used, it's going to be dated August '75 or later, possibly much later as batches of these, drilled for mechanical fuel pumps, were produced from time to time, long after '02 production ceased. But any E21 2.0 head -- provided it's been drilled for a mechanical fuel pump -- should work for you. If you specifically want new, you will be hard-pressed to do better than wmass2002's offering (it's unlikely to be a '75 casting, however, if the date is important to you): it's not clear whether BMW will produce more batches of E21 heads. And, if produced, they will likely be far, far more than $600! Used E21 heads appear periodically, but, as I mentioned, they are appreciably rarer than E12 heads.

Steve: The E12 casting heads are also much-more in demand, as a result of the facts / logic you noted; personally, I find E12 heads more-difficult to acquire in good, used condition. (It's why I use E21 casting heads for the race engines ... and why I have several on the shelf.) -KB

This is all good to know (and I didn't realize others may be actively looking for E21 heads). My '76's original E21 head had corroded through the cooling passage walls and I had to find an E21 replacement two years ago. There were a few around but they were crap. I finally found an NOS example, albeit at a very high price! Heck, I've been tempted by wmass2002's head, just in case I'm alive 35 years from now for my car's second engine overhaul!

FYI, about 14 months ago I was in hunt for e21 2.0 after found out that that original head had major cracks running deep in chamber 2 & 3 and was no way to weld. After a month or so found e21, 2.0 (78 casting) with original deck height (5.080"). Took that to machine shop and they drilled fuel pump rod hole and mounting holes and refurbished it. Worked out great.
