1972 Tii Rear Bumper Center -Help-Where Can I Find It?

Recommended Posts

I am quite frustrated with trying to get the center section and the clueless parts supplier. I ordered the center section part # ending with 006 and the cross section was too big. The part supplier then proceeded to order it from in-country and then from Germany with the same part number expecting different results, (see photo, plastic wrapped one is the new one). I then asked them if they thought maybe it was the European version, they then ordered that part, #656. He sent photos that showed that the ends were the right ones, but I was concerned that the section may have the licence lights holes. He really couldn't answer if they did. Thus, if you are still with me: What part do I need to order to get that center section of the rear bumper?? Is it NLA?

Depends what year car you have.

51 12 1 801 250 is the rear centre bumper for an early US car

51 12 1 816 006 is the rear centre bumper for a later US car (up to '73)

I think the change was early '71 when the rear bumper changed to the "long" sides with attached rubber bump strip.

From the pictures you show, it appears that your supplier is sending you bumper blades from either 2500/2800 or pre 1974 Bavaria sedans, or from a 2000CS or 2800CS coupe.  Cross sections are similar, but the sixes bumpers are larger and longer.

The correct part you seek is readily available, and Blunt Tech (Steve Petersen) is a good source, both for price and getting the right part.

I just looked at your post/pics again.

The bumper on the left is obviously for the '71-'73 set up as it has the holes for the rubber strip mounting pegs, but the profile is NOT correct. The bumper on the right has the correct profile...ie the flat portion that the rubber strip mounts to.

FYI - if you order the #656, you should get the correct '71-'73 bumper profile, but it should have the holes for the Euro in-bumper plate lights.

Give BLUNT a call/message as he will get you the correct part at a competitive price.
