I took a look at this car: it was originally and remains Sahara. Although this car's restoration would require considerable work -- both body and mechanical -- I view this as a restorable example, and certainly not as a parts car. The current owner has owned it since ca. 1982, but the car has not been driven since an accident 20+ years ago. At the time, the damaged nosepiece, front fenders, and hood were removed -- a bit crudely -- and a matching non-tii (Sahara, '72) was acquired for parts. Other than the original airbox -- swapped out prior to the accident -- it appears that most of what you would need to restore the body, including fenders, hood, bumper, trim, grilles, etc., is present, including an NOS nosepiece (sorry, it has a snorkel).

All numbers are matching, but the engine has not been turned over (since the accident, I believe). Because the engine's coolant was drained when the damaged nose was removed, however, at least that source of potential engine damage -- water and antifreeze -- is absent. And for a '72 tii, with its original engine, I'd sleeve cylinders if the condition demanded it! The car has no sunroof but does have Clardy A/C, an earlier Clardy unit as it has the reciprocating compressor used prior to Clardy's conversion to rotary compressors, which occurred ca. '78.

From a rust perspective, the bases of the A pillars are solid, the rockers are solid, and the rear shock towers are solid. The spare tire well appears to have some rust-through and, although I couldn't confirm it in my brief inspection, I suspect there may be some floor rust, particularly around the pedal box. But this is not a rustbucket. A buyer would, nonetheless, want to probe the entire floor to get a better picture of the car's current needs.

Plastic intake runners are present, tii clock is present, correct 2-piece dash has cracks. The front seats look quite good and restorable, but have black hinges rather than chrome hinges so I surmise they may have come over from the '72 parts car, which perhaps was a later '72 (I expected 2761691 to have chrome hinges because my 2762204 had chrome hinges, but others have pointed out the "hinge switch-over" may not have been a clean cut-off at a particular VIN). A set of original full wheel covers is present but the original 5x13 steelies have been replaced with 4.5x13 steelies, so order up a new set of the early OEM alloys! The front steelies are bolted on backwards because 4.5" rims will not fit over tii calipers!

The car is in Snellville, Georgia, 15 or so miles east of Atlanta -- it's near my plater and powder coater so it was hard to avoid a visit! Unlike the '73 tii I looked at in Decatur, Georgia about 2 months ago -- a rustbucket that only the bravest of restorers would take on -- this appears to be a do-able project and, hey, it's a numbers-matching '72 tii! Do I need to state that more clearly? You just have to want a Sahara example!

One of my sales reps. lives in Snellville. I've been trying to convince him to get another car.

Keep trying, Jim: restorable numbers-matching '72 tii's for $2,500 are a rapidly-vanishing (already-vanished?) species and this one appears worth saving!

Regards,

Steve

Thanks for the pics Steve!

Amazingly, it still has the little wire retaining clip for the fuel line on the KF pump.

tii crankshaft pulley for A/C:  $$$

CCA sticker in rear window:  Excellent

Already on dollies: brakes must be seized

Yes, amazing re: the KF pump's fuel line retainer!

Please don't think in terms of parts values: it may give the wrong people the wrong ideas!

And that's BMW-no space-CCA, the original style before BMW NA stepped in and said "BMW" must appear as a separate element in the abbreviation, i.e., BMW CCA (for their branding purposes)! The seller was a member: I asked.

Both rear tires are flat so that alone could explain the rear dollies; but, you're right, it probably has frozen brakes as well!

Best,

Steve

Dat wheel.. (as the kids would say)

Jason,

Have you forgotten I'm old(er)? I don't know what "Dat wheel" means! Just tell me: is it good or bad?

Steve

  • 4 weeks later...

This car is still listed on Craig's List! That suggests that it hasn't sold. Are you kidding me? Is there no one here willing to take a risk on a matching-numbers '72 tii for $2,500? What, you say you have a list of $2,500 '72 tii's as long as your arm? That's what I figured!

Is an '02 with its nosepiece off simply too intimidating? The parts are there! You just need to....find a decent body shop! If no one will take on this project, I don't want to hear any more whining about round taillight tii prices!

Oh well: I tried!

Best,

Steve
