How Do You Know The Original Color?

Hey Jerry,

If you email the VIN to BMW at the email address info.grouparchiv (AT) bmwgroup.com they will be able to give you all kinds of info about the car (original color, date imported, who it was imported to, etc.).

I'm considering buying a "basket case" Tii. It might be a Colorado or Inka. It's hard to tell since it has been repainted several times. How can I find out what the original color was? All I have is the vin# 2761691.

Thanks,

Jerry

See "conserv's" message in the Cars for Sale" category/forum. My guess is Sahara!

Jerry,

I'll be very surprised if it is anything other than Sahara, but please do make a request to BMW Archives, as explained above. Besides confirming original color, I'd like to know the manufacturing date for 2761691 -- just as a point of reference. And if you're not going to make the request, please let me know as I could make it as well: but I don't want to make multiple simultaneous requests to the helpful people at the Archives.

Good luck! I'd really like to see that car find a good home! Did I mention that it's a numbers-matching '72 tii?

I'm thinking there "should be" or "was" an underhood sticker that tells you the color ??  But I'm guessing it no longer exists ??  Am I looking at the correct sticker here ??

Carl,

Yes, tii 2761691 wears a well-worn Sahara paint sticker, clearly featured in one of the photos I posted after seeing the car -- and, in all likelihood, original to this car.

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/classifieds/item/3758-1972-2002tii-vin-2761691/

But.....those paint stickers have been readily available since the cars were new, so you can't always trust them and even some replacement stickers are looking fairly "vintage" by now. People change the stickers to fit their color changes. And I have, in fact, seen an '02 wearing an authentic-looking paint sticker naming a color that wasn't created until the mid-'80s. If you contact many of the sticker vendors, they will make you a custom sticker that says anything you'd like it to say. How do I know? I custom ordered a paint sticker that says "polaris PVC-frei" to match my '76's original sticker, as it was not otherwise available.

Confirmation by BMW Archives is simply more certain than relying on the paint sticker.

In this particular case, I looked at the car, in person. I've been an '02 owner continuously since '73, I owned a Sahara '67 1600-2. I seriously doubt there was a color change, but only verification with Archives will confirm it. And I would absolutely make an info request to Archives if I were considering purchasing the car!

Regards,

Steve

Hi,

if you are buying a basket case and it needs

alot of work then removing three more pieces

will not make much of a difference.  i have found

that only very high end restorations, ever, remove

the "B" pillar anodized capping that goes over

the actual steel part of the pillar. so remove the

rear wing window then remove the lower trim

that is below the window, then remove the vertical

trim and see the never exposed original color

of the car. this is also a good place to color match

the paint to redo an original car.

good luck

Mr owl, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop?

2761691 same as the VIN, coincidence?
