Hows your heater? What do I need to do for a GREAT heating system?

When my valve quit working and I was not getting heat, I reached up behind the valve and was able to move the lever between the open and closed positions, but it made no difference in whether I got heat.  As it turned out, the screw that holds the lever over the square 'key' of the valve had come loose.  I tightened it and the valve works again.  I got lucky.  (It is too bad they put the business end of the valve on the side you cannot see).

A Thought…for testing purposes, I think I am gonna remove the valve and replace with a short pipe.  This will allow me to test the heater core.  If the core is working, I may just need to rehab that valve.  I can "probably" replace the foam pads of the heater box without removing it.  May be a easier job than I thought.  What am I saying, its never an "easy' job…lol

3-1/2 years ago the heater core finally got a pinhole leak.  I drove to 2002AD in Pomona, arriving at 9am.  Ben gave me the keys to a 2002 and I drove over to Centro Basco for lunch.  When I returned to 2002AD at 2:30pm I had a very full stomach, a new heater core, and the heater box had been rehabbed ...... and I still had all the skin on my knuckles and a very cheery disposition, but the mechanic looked a little frazzled.

Cheers,

Carl

Update....

So I pulled the heater valve and replaced it with a piece of PVC temporarily.  I THOUGHT I was gonna find a seized Heater Valve.  What I found was a heater valve that wasn't in bad shape at all.  The valve was open and moving the lever was fairly smooth.  There was almost no liquid at all in the valve and none leaked when I pulled the valve out.  I put the pvc pipe in and ran the car for about 30 minutes.  turned the heater on and zero heat.  Popped off the radiator cap and proceeded to burp the system.  added a bit of coolant not much at all, and massaged the hoses going in and out of the heater box.  It took a little more coolant, not much.

So we can rule out the valve.  The box opened and closed all the flaps with the cables.  The hose coming out of the bad of the head needs to be swapped, although massaging it did not reveal any blockages.  I thought maybe the head, but this is a newly rebuilt head.  Not the head that was on the car and before the new head, it didn't work either.  I'd have a hard time thinking 2 different heads were blocked.  Also I can feel pressure in the hose coming out of the block.

Next up...Blocked heater core?

The hoses are all standard 02 hoses except the hoses under the intake manifold.  I think a mechanic connected a hose for a bypass of the intake.  I have always planned on getting the ireland bypass kit for a steel pipe and hose instead of a rubber hose that was used.  i don't think that has anything to do with the heater.

This sounds suspicious....

Would you mind posting a photo of the bypass?

Mine produces MUCH heat, I did pay $20 to have the core rehabbed and a pin hole leak soldered. It may also be that Porsche fan I used  :P

where does the other end go?

Same place it should go. Behind the alternator. Hard to see it but you can sorta see it.

Ok. Update. Pulled hides all over the place and cheeked flow and checked the heater core. Zero flow through the heater core. Pulled out my replacement that's sat in the garage for 3 years and perfect flow. So time to rehab that second box and stick it in. The only thing i need is the screw that retains the cable on the lever of the heater valve. That was rusted and the screw disintegrated.

I used a 4mm bolt with a hole drilled.

I assembled in this order: Bolt, Arm, Washer, Nut, Cable, Washer then a Lock nut

As shown in my photo above

It works very well with no binding.
