Dog is my Co-Pilot

I have upgraded the back seat for Luna and thought I should bring this thread up to date.  I took the stock seat bottom out, which needs re-stuffing in a bad way and installed the seat out of my old '68 bug.  I wish I had a full set of diamond tuck Naugahyde seats!  The bug seat is deeper and wider, so she sits a little taller, for better viewing and it puts the window sill at a better height for her chin.

I recently revived my '69 Bug, in part, so I can drive it while I do some work on the 02.  This meant I had to make it a dog friendly car as well.  With the rear seat back removed, the platform in the back measures 38" by 38", which is EXACTLY what Luna's Sealy Posturepedic Memory Foam bed measures.  (She has two, since I sliced a twin mattress in half, so there is still one in the house).  I stuck the eight inch thick foam back there and folded the three inch foam pieces over and tucked them in in front of the wheel wells.

Seeing as how it is summer (and we are in a drought) I took the pop-out windows out, so she can let her ears flap in the wind.

She needs a little help getting in and out, but we have it figured out.  Now I just need to order the horse hair pads for the 'people seats' : )  oh, and a headliner... and... and... old cars are needy... just like old dogs.  (Two of my favorite things).

I have added the guts of a long pillow to the bed, to raise Luna's chin, for better window access.

The extra soft padding appears to give good support and she is less nervous on the twisty roads.

A new old feather pillow fills the gap on the passenger side.

I am in full-on dog-sitting mode for two months this summer.

The seat rails stick out in the back of the seat and have sharp edges.  Luna cut a pad on her foot and I suspect that's what got her.  This cardboard cover solved the problem.

and of course, some gratuitous Luna photos

edit: okay, one more photo, just to be silly.

Luna likes peas.  Well, I eat the peas and she eats the pods.

Is that a happy face, or what?

Nice!  I've said it before, that is one lucky dog!  Here is my newest co-pilot in her first ride in the 1600!  Meet Lola,  just a year old!

So sorry to hear about Luna's passing.  It's great that you have those beautiful pictures of her in your '02!  Those are some of the best memories I have of my 2 pups who have passed away (Stuka and Rikka), tooling around in the 1600, windows down, sunroof open.  Picture is of Rikka(driving) and one of my current co-pilots (Renner) as a pup.  Godspeed Luna!58e7792868641_RikkaRennerin1600002.thumb.jpg.04e4b7f9b2d8fd1c399b7e9932c8c76f.jpg

This was my very first co-pilot Stuka! She passed away in '03 at 12 years old.  She preferred to ride in my '73 Bavaria that I had at the time.IMG_20170407_081452281.thumb.jpg.5f9c981433c495d5fb45931fc622f4c5.jpg
