Would you share where you sourced the vinyl? Color name or number?

I need to upholster my front and rear seats but the local shops in my small town cannot find the correct color.

Thanks

Bill

Bill,

It's just a single patch panel (driver's seat cushion, perforated vinyl portion), from a used seat. The entire story is told in this very thread!

And if your car still has the original interior, and that's what you're looking to restore, '74 model year cars signaled a new "brown" interior color: tan or beige instead of saddle (as is COOP's '72 interior).

I had the exact same situation with my original driver seat, someone had replaced the center section with a slightly different color used vinyl. I have recently found a nicely kept rear seat cover, and will use that to redo the front seat in the near future.

But for drivability reasons I have color matched Recaros ....

And...

The rear seatback and seatbottom have now been relieved of their grungy 40-year-old patina...

Delia,

Care to share what you used to clean the back seat?  It looks so much better.  As far as protectants for vinyl, I swear by this stuff called Rolite's Premium Protectant.  It was originally made to protecting the vinyl in airplanes.

Mild liquid soap, a selection of soft-bristle brushes, lots of water from a spray bottle and many towels to soak up moisture.  The deep perforations were managed with a toothbrush and air pressure.

In some areas, it took several passes to remove those years of grime.  In other areas, the vinyl had darkened ever-so-slightly from the accumulated grime and UV penetration.

The rear seat back and bottom alone took several hours. However, given the difficulty sourcing 40+ year old original vinyl, I erred on the side of caution.  YMMV

Delia,

It sounds like you took great care in cleaning that up.  Great to hear.  I'm the same way when working with the brittle old plastic '02 parts too.  After breaking a few things, I eventually learned.  Thanks,

John

There is a good article on the Corvair forum, about cleaning old vinyl seats - using GOOP:

http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.php?1,417878,419492

The advantage of GOOP is that is has something in it that makes the vinyl soft again - and it's cheap.

That's how I did mine. As Delia said, water, soft brushes and lots of elbow grease. The perforations are a little tricky - first getting them cleaned, and getting the dirty GOOP out of them. I used a shop vac to suck it dry, less messy than compressed air.

I need to find my before & after pictures.

Effective, perhaps, but then everyone would say,

COOP used GOOP

Sorry :-)
