1973 BMW 2002 "The Turkey" Nearly Complete But Structural Rust

Recommended Posts

Year:: 1973

Make:: BMW

Model:: 2002

Price:: 1995

Location: : West Newton

The auction link is here:

I had a Buy It Now for $1995 on it, but the BIN vanished as soon as bids started coming in. I've had phone offers from folks I don't know for $1500, but who knows how real they are. I think I'm inclined to let the auction run, just to see what a running rusted roundie brings if there are a lot of eyeballs on it.

I think you should let the auction run it's course but you should leave the car complete with the grilles even if it doesn't hit your $1500 mark. You mentioned that you don't want to see the car hacked up but you want to take off the grilles if it doesn't hit $1500. The new owner should get a complete car even if it doesn't hit your mark.....Just my 2 cents.

I really hope someone restores this sad beauty and not part it out.  The sheet metal for every area that is rotted on this car is available and affordable. That fact is amazing in itself considering the car is 42 years old.  This car is a novice body man or woman welder's dream. This is a perfect car for a group or club project. What would be the result?

If you are reading this FAQ, you all know.

I have a 2002 that was similar to the “The Turkey” until I found decent sheet metal from a couple of cars and set out to replace the rot with metal. With the help of a couple of good friends and a lot of elbow grease the car is solid again and still on the road.

I hope “The Turkey” has a good ending too.

This was a great outcome, in my opinion. By getting the engine running and making the car mobile, and by talking frankly about the car, you elevated it from pure parts car to potential restoration candidate. Do it again (with another example)!

Best regards,
