Momo Prototipo - silver or black?

Decided I'm going to buy a Prototipo to replace my 320is steering wheel.

Can't decide between black or silver.

What does everyone like better and why?

Car is a green/black interior 72. All things on it are period correct.

both colors are period.....the more common perhaps is blk.....

buuut......it is subjective...your call.

alpina used a similiar wheel back in the day.....3 spoke...etc etc......most were black...

yet the  period  3 spoke Petri was silver..go figure.

blk lends itslef to a hot rod, modded look....... yet silver can be more elegant.

that being said......r u sure 350 mm is what you want?....

The car gets very limited (less than 500 miles a year last few years) of use.

I have a 320IS wheel now (which is 380 I think) that I like, it just does not have the leather on it anymore.

Car does not get parallel parked.

Is 350 not a great way to go? I was choosing based on style.

Black is the classic choice, it minimizes reflection and any distraction to the driver while providing good grip, and control. Many Porsche factory racecars utilized the black Momo Prototipo steering wheels. From a pure functionality standpoint it works best. That being said there's nothing like a sexy period steering wheel on a great sports car. Silver looks great, and the Prototipo silver has a matte finish, this is a difficult choice. You may want to look at pictures of other people's steering wheels, I think there is a thread on the site that has wheels listed on it. Steering wheel choice is one of the most fun vintage sports car decisions you can make. I'm included some varied pictures, just for the fun of it. Sometimes you just have to choose, silver or black, right or left - every one of us is largely a result of every decision we have made,  your life is one big algorithm / decision tree in someways, -allowing for the occasional random chance occurrence, and luck of genetics and birth.  Cheers, Peter

I'm going through a silver phase. Got this wheel as a gift from my father in 1986...sold it in 1991....found it and bought it back (for wayy more money than it was worth to a normal human being) in 2012. (people can be such assholes, when they have you by the nostalgic short hairs.)

No regrets. It has damage on it, from my own hands from 25 years ago.... never letting it go again!  :D

Scott, a silver one was in The Turkey. It was the only part I liberated before selling it. I'll be putting it in my tii. If you need to see how a silver one looks against a black interior, this is it before I removed it. I think the silver is a nice accent, picking up the silver round center pieces on the switches on the dashboard and the little bits of chrome on the doors.

Thanks for all the advice, this forum is awesome.

I was looking for the BMW horn buttons and saw the Alpina (obviously knockoff) ones one Ebay. When did those become available?

What do you guys think about them. Cool or too poser?

Well, you know my opinion. If you like it, do it, and if someone gives you a hard time, tell them to pound sand.

I like Alpina horn buttons, but I'd look for one with the DCOE in the emblem.

As far as Black vs. Silver...I've always leaned towards silver for some contrast against the mostly black dash.

"Back in the day" when our cars were new, most aftermarket steering wheels--wood or leather rim--had silver spokes--earlier ones (pre 1970 or so) were polished, then the Federal safety laws took effect and the spokes were given a matte finish, just like windshield wiper arms/blades and the chrome trim on dashboards.

In 2002's I like the silver spokes, since the dash has some other silver bits and pieces. I attached a picture of my old 73tii with a  350mm silver prototipo, and a 380mm Petri in my current 72tii.

In 911's I prefer black spokes, since  the dash is all black.

My Alpina has a 380 Momo/Alpina with black spokes, has to be that way, since most Alpina wheels were black.
