Tii Caliper help needed

tomphot

Recommended Posts

I ordered calipers for my '72 Tii - it was a tight install and I realized why as the ends of the calipers are rubbing against the lip of the rotor drum.

A1 Cardone #s 19-226 & 19-227 per the site I bought them from.

I went to the partsgeek site and they list a different part number but the picture they show is of the ones I have.

Please help, what should I be looking for?

If you want to use those calibers you can either 1) grind calibers a bit to suit or 2)lathe hubs down a bit. I'd go with alternative 1 if we're talking about a one or two of millimeters.

Yes, I've considered both options - however - I'm sure BMW produced a caliper that would fit a Tii without grinding required. I'm trying to find out what I should be trying to order.

Tom,

There was a recent thread on precisely this issue: some (many?) of the rebuilt units, particularly Cardone rebuilds, suffer from this problem. The reason is unclear, although some inferior new Korean castings (including a new caliper half assembled with an old Ate half) and improper assembly have been implicated.

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/166845-2002-calipers-cardone-ate-rebuild-and-new-korean/?hl=%2Btii+%2Bcalipers+%2Bgrind#entry1044637

An absolute sure-fire way to avoid the possibility of bad fit is to get a "known-good" set of calipers (e.g., the calipers that were on your car) rebuilt. 2002haus.com (Rob) can get them expertly rebuilt and refinished, but you've got to forget those $49.95 Cardone prices; a rebuild and refinishing is $400 for the pair. You will receive back the same set you give them. I would assume that many other shops could do this level of work as well -- such as White Post Restorations -- but I would expect the price to be similar.

Regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve, I guess I'll put my grinding wheel to good use. Unfortunately, the ones that were on the car were pretty bad and ended up in the trash when I thought I had a set that would work. They weren't original as I have a receipt from when they were bought by the PO in '96. Lesson learned.

I still don't understand this crazy issue with caliper clearance on the "off the shelf" rebuilds! I have NEVER had such issues with these. I've used Cardone as well as other companies with good luck for years. And have sold dozens and dozens of them, when I worked at a 2002 parts house, throughout the 80s-90s..... so strange... and sad to hear. The ones on my tii were installed 5 years ago and are still working / fitting great. It can't just be a "luck of the draw"...can it?

I have purchased two sets of rebuilt tii calipers. The first set fit perfectly fine but one of the bleeder screws was partially stripped so I removed them and rebuilt my old calipers. The second set was purchased from another FAQ'r and the back half of 1 caliper had to be ground to fit onto the strut (of my 69 with tii suspension). These rebuilt calipers don't seem to be assembled correctly and/or mismatched. Eventually the rebuilt ones will disappear if everyone refuses to send back their cores. Mine on the 69 look identical to those pictured here.

You and me both, Paul!

It appears, however, to be a recent issue. And I've yet to hear about the same issue for non-tii calipers. Is that because tii calipers are inherently a bit more "snug" than non-tii calipers? Does it have something to do with a relative dearth of tii caliper cores? Do caliper halves need to be "matched," if not caliper-by-caliper, then by caliper batches, or caliper "eras"? Stated differently, if I bolt a caliper half cast in 1972 to a caliper half cast in 1984, could that create a fitment issue?

Just speculating...

Regards,

Steve

The problem is when you order a "rebuilt" tii caliper from A1-Cardone, sometimes you get a real Ate brand caliper that's been rebuilt, sometimes you get a brand new knock-off of a tii caliper.  I've received both from them.  I never tried fitting one of the knock-off ones.  I've heard that they don't always fit correctly and need to be "adjusted" with some grinding.  I have a set sitting on the shelf for that very reason.  If you order new tii calipers from BMW, you get the actual Ate brand calipers that are what came standard on tiis.  I think I paid somewhere around $300 a side earlier this year for new ones from BMW and that was when I got a very good price.  I didn't want to screw around and risk a problem with my brakes.  They had to be shipped from Germany, so extra freight charges came into play.

Here's a new Ate brand tii Caliper from BMW (now Made in England).  These fit perfectly without any grinding required.

Here's a picture of one of the A1Cardone knock-offs.  If you can get them to fit with a little grinding and they work good.  What the heck, the price is right ;)
