165/13 tires

Last year I replaced the 185/70-13's with a set of Hercules RAPTIS TR1 tires in 165/80-13 from Gunnells Tire in Mesa, AZ., If I remember, they were $68.00 each at the time.

Yes - They are Chinese.

Yes - They do handle much lighter than the 185/70's, I imagine this is how our cars handled in the 70's.

Yes -  I just like to drive my car. It's not for show. I don't race it and if they don't suit  your car - that is OK too. Isn't it wonderful to live in the good old USA!

I think I just bought 185/60r13 Federal 595s.

Let's see how those turn out with the smaller sidewall.

You should see how they turn in also.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! :D

I'm having some difficulty finding the original size tire for my 74 02. Does anyone know of some places to purchase this size? Thank you,

Mike Davis

Mike.....Coker has the original size Michelin 165-13 XAS tires but they are pricey.  They came on 74 2002tii's.  Not sure if they came on 2002's also.

As of December 1970, at least some regular 2002s were getting XAS tires. I still have four of the original five tires from the car, still mounted up on the original wheels.

Most U.S. 2002s came with 165HR13 Michelin XAS's. I would not make the same statement regarding non-U.S. cars. Although XAS's commonly show up on window stickers from '68 onward, they became, at least by late '71, one of Hoffman Motors' mandatory options and, with a few exceptions -- possibly due to supply issues -- they continued to be the norm for all '02s under BMW NA (early '75 through the end of production). I've yet to see a square taillight window sticker without "165/HR13 STEEL BELTED RADIALS" among the list of standard equipment, "165/HR13" being a clear reference to XAS's: there were only a couple other H-rated 165/13 tires during the era -- e.g., Dunlop -- and none of those were shipping on '02s.

My '70 (built September 8, 1969), a '72 tii I parted in '74 (built July 10, 1972), and my '76 (built April 19, 1976) all came with XAS's. Each of the first two cars had less than 28,000 miles when I acquired it -- in the early '70s -- and I purchased the '76 new. My '67 1600-2, on the other hand, had well-worn Semperits on when I acquired it at 54,000 miles and I assumed they were the second tires for a car that did NOT come from the factory with XAS's. Below are window stickers from a '68 1600-2 (not mine) and my '76. The XAS's were a $59 option in '68 but standard equipment in '76.

Regards,

Steve
