"better" is subjective. Better performance, better value, better cost...

Probably more options out there, especially in Europe. There are lots of threads on this.

You can also purchase from Longstone in Euros. Given the current weakness of the Euro -- against the dollar -- versus the current strength of the pound, you can save REAL dollars by purchasing from Longstone, in Euros.

That 185HR13 XAS, as I mentioned before, is a 185/80, 24.8" in diameter versus 23.2" for a 165HR13. No one has yet commented on whether a 24.8" tire can work on a stock '02: 1.6" is a material difference!

I recently purchased a set of the Toyo Extensa 185/70 13 per Mike Self's recommendation here.  I have them on my daily driver with 5x13" stock steel wheels and really like them.  5000 miles and counting ...

I have these too. Cheap price. They aren't the stickiest, but at 38-40psi they grip ok and are progressive on breakaway and quiet.

I think you would want to consider the increase in radius rather than diameter because that is what is going to determine clearances in any given direction from the center of the axle. The radius increase is 0.8", which is perhaps not so bad. But ultimately whether or not it operates without rubbing may depend on setup/configuration (spring length and stiffness, rim et, camber, etc.).

Another consideration is that increasing the tire diameter from 23.2 to 24.8 would have a similar effect as changing my 3.91 diff to a 3.65. Definitely something to take into consideration.

I recognize that it's an 0.8" increase in radius, but particularly when I think of the front suspension, through its full range of motion -- up, down, left, right -- that can be significant, which is why I was hoping to hear from '02 owners who are running 24.8"-diameter tires, or something thereabouts. They may be out there; I'm simply not familiar with them.

Unlike my 1961 F-350, which has sufficient clearance to permit a factory optional upgrade from 17.5" to 19.5" rims -- with no other changes -- the '02 is a fairly tight package!

I've been eyeing these tires for a few weeks; don't know anything about quality, but they appear to have a good tread pattern, and are inexpensive.

I mounted a set of the Toyos on my '73 back in April and have put about 5k miles on 'em since--mostly highway--to Mid America and Vintage.  Perfectly satisfactory--seem to be good in rain as well as dry, and aren't noisy even on our old Ohio concrete roads.  They ain't Yoko Y351s or Phoenix Stahlflexes, but they're fine for road use (including twisties).  Got 'em last fall from Treaddepot for $58 each--and I think they're running a free shipping on Toyo tires until 31 Oct.  

 

I have Kumho KR 21s on my '69, and honestly can't tell much difference between the two.  I bit on the Toyos because of the free shipping.
