Picture of Late 60's 2002

I was looking back at some pictures I took in the late 60’s and discovered this one. I was taking a picture of a burned out building in Washington D.C. following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and just as I took the picture a 2002 rode by. The picture is dated “April 1968.” If you enlarge the photo you can almost see who was driving and the passenger. Now I realize this was a long time ago so this question is to all you Senior Citizen FAQ 2002 owners; is the picture of anyone here?

Very cool, Mike!

It's obviously a very early car -- it almost looks like it's got rust on the door, fender, and rocker, but I'm going to assume it's just dirt! Whitewall tires and dog-dish hub caps, not the nicest combo to me -- but the inspiration for today's rat rod look!

Thanks for posting!

Cool find. Based on the small hubcaps and the date of the picture, I'd put money on its being a 1600-2, which would have been in the US for a couple of years before the 2002 arrived for the 1968 model year. It seems unlikely that a brand-new 2002 would already have had its tires replaced for whitewalls--I don't think they were an option. And wasn't Bristol more common on 1600s than 2002s?

Dave....I think your right.  It most likely is a 1600.  The 1600-2 was sold in this country in 1966 and 2002's in 1968 so by the condition of the one in the picture it has to be older then 1968.

I seem to recall, Dave, that the 2002 was not produced until March or April 1968, which would certainly confirm that this is a 1600-2.

And is the passenger leaning forward to see the Glas coupe, or is the 1600-2 traveling with the Glas coupe? Seriously, what are the chances of these two cars independently touring a burned-out D.C. block....
