Picture of Late 60's 2002

And is the passenger leaning forward to see the Glas coupe, or is the 1600-2 traveling with the Glas coupe? Seriously, what are the chances of these two cars independently touring a burned-out D.C. block....

Steve

Steve...that is exactly what I thought.  It looks like the passenger is looking at the Glas coupe but the driver is looking straight ahead so I would think it is a coincidence that the two cars are there.  If they were together the driver would be looking in that direction getting prepared to turn.  I think the greater coincidence is that this car showed up in a picture I took of a building and that I never knew what a BMW 1600/2002 was back 68 and two years later I bought my first 2002.

Mike,

Accidental? Those two BMW's -- and BMW's were REALLY uncommon in 1968, seeing two together was unheard of -- subliminally etched themselves into your brain. It took 2 years for the synapses to do whatever synapses do, but you had no real choice BUT to buy a BMW 2 years later. Embrace the truth and be happy that wasn't a duo of AMC Ambassadors -- I know, I've just horribly insulted a forum member who LOVES his/her 1968 Ambassador.

The 1600-2 is preparing to make a left turn, following the Glas, and the 1600-2's driver is focused on on-coming traffic.

Best regards,

Steve

I was in school in DC at that time, and I remember it well.  I remember the time period, that is, but, unfortunately, not the car.  :)  That looks like it might be around 7th and Mt. Vernon Place NW.  The Mt Vernon Library would be behind the photographer.  FWIW.  ;)

Are those Euro turn signals on the car?

I'm struggling to id the car but it doesn't look like a 1600gt to me - the back panel is ovalised, where as the 1600gt's is square.

My first thought had been an Alfa Giulietta Sprint Speciale, but I gave up on that, although it's clearly some late '50s/ early '60s related design (an Italian design firm had a big hand in it!)

  • 3 weeks later...

Not sure what car brand but the place I used to work in Old Town Alexandria (Foreign Car Service) supposedly got their stockroom shelves from a dealership that was burned during those DC Riots.  Those were troubled times.

BTW:  A recent BaT Porsche for sale up North mentions some work was performed on the car some years ago by "Heinz in Springfield, VA".   Wonder if they meant Heinz Kestermann in Alexandria (the founder of Foreign Car Service)?
