Hi everyone,

I have recently picked up a one owner '71 1600. The car is mostly original, however the previous owner told me the original engine had been replaced.

Can anyone help me identify this engine? I have not had any luck decoding this engine number based on the info I can find online.

Any info will be a help.

Thanks,

Cheyne

not very accurate, i punched in the vin for an older engine i have  2378401 and it said that it was from 76.

im pretty sure it is 70, 0r 71.

I've used the 2002 Club of Columbia's VIN decoder for years and I've never found an error. Could you be reading 237.. when the number is 257...?

Also, on the exhaust side of the block, approximately between cylinders number 3 and 4, is there a two-digit year date?

Regards,

Steve

2378401 = 2002 built in Jan '76.

However, 2578401 would be a 2002 built late (Nov?) '71 (ie. a '72 model).
