WTB 2002 3.90 diff

I own a 76' 2002 3 speed auto, and am currently in search of a replacement 3.90 differential. Mine is currently on it's last legs and really need one. Will pay the money to ship it here. Located in Memphis,TN.  Let me know what you have.

Since there are probably twenty 3.64 open '02 diffs for every one 3.90 open '02 diff (as mentioned, the 3.90 only came on 49-state '76 models), have you considered going to a 3.64? It would mean a bit less acceleration, but lower revs and a bit less noise -- and a bit better gas mileage -- on the highway. Alternatively, the 3.91 open e21 diff is fairly plentiful, but you'll have to insert spacers -- not a big deal -- or re-jigger your stub axles as you install one on an '02.

3.91 limited slip e21 diffs are also common, but at a completely different price level than an open diff, as in $500-$900 versus $0-$150! Bearings and seals are common "wear" items on all these old diffs. Think twice about "just sticking" a diff with unknown history in your car unless you're also comfortable pulling it out shortly afterward to address such issues.

Good luck,

Steve

Ended up finding a bmw diff guy in North Carolina that is going to rebuild mine thankfully, thought I was't gonna be able to get it fixed.

Good answer. Most 40-year-old '02 diffs are in similar condition to yours, and they often only need a new bearing or two and new seals.

Steve

installed in all automatics regardless of year

Did not know that.

But, I have to ask: how do you know that? The blue factory service manual simply shows 3.64 diffs in 2002A's. And the July 1969, December 1972, August 1973, and February 1975 Owner's handbooks similarly only show 3.64 diffs, and all four of those handbooks include 2002A models.

Thanks and regards,

Steve
