restoring interior door panel

I am going to restore the interior door panels. What is best to use for material, plywood or door panel material like in this link

http://perfectfit.com/15347/154532/Chipboard-Car-Panelboard/Kraft-Tan-Waterproof-Panelboard.html

I can get plywood in different thicknesses like 3 mm, 3,6 mm and 4 mm. What is the best corrrect size here? Seems to me that 3mm is a little thin?

My guess is that soundproofing is not that good with plywood?

In that link I presented to you it says that the panel is .10 inch thick AND 1/8" thick.... I am not american, but I had the understanding that " means inch. How can this panel be both a tenth and an eigth inch thick?

I would use plywood and Aardvark makes the perfect sized panels for our cars for about $100 for a pair. you can also get the fiber board door cards but they're prone to swelling if any moisture gets to them.

here's the link to Aardvark   https://www.2002parts.com/bmw/interior.html

good luck!

I agree with going with the Aardvark panels if you can. I see you're in Norway so maybe it's not an option.

If I were making my own I would probably go with 4mm plywood to avoid the staples from piercing through the vinyl.

Probably even further away but Beaner7102 has CNC machined foamed plastic boards that fit perfectly. Here's how I fitted them: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/blog/163/entry-461-door-card-rehab/

fwiw...be careful using staples if the thickness of your boards are close to same as the originals...the shortest across the counter staples i've been able to find without having to use a unique gun to shoot them are 3/16 inch....they will penetrate the vinyl on its face

good work Simeon...your panel look fantastic

Nice job, Simeon!

Stevenola told me Thompson's water seal can be used on the cardboard to stiffen it up a bit, and seal it.

I was thinking of cutting some thin plexiglas to support the failing boards. Haven't got around to playing with it...

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P
Two running things. Two broken things.

So Simeon, you actually painted the chrome strips. How did they turn out?

A normal construction plywood board with dimensions 2400x1200x4mm costs about 20usd over here, so I think I will have a go at making them myself. I was thinking about gluing, not using staples. For attaching the top rail I will drill holes and be using rivets instead of the bent metal style used originally.

Should I glue under the entire vinyl or just at the edges?
