I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but it has some good info on engine building and I wanted to redeem Toby a little on the issue of stamped connecting rods. 

 

While looking at my rods I noticed that mine were marked not with the cylinder number, but what I'm guessing is a weight group. The other side was blank.  These were from a '74 tii, but it had a factory replacement block at some point. They probably had several different labeling methods used over the years, and one may have included not stamping them at all.
