Lets see if that helps. I would do a dry run with teh rods outside the crank case - so you can move them with out pistons attached.

I remember you saying the crank turned by hand before the rods were tightened, but DO NOT mix up the main bearing caps either...

You should also make sure the bearing back and rod surface are clean and smooth.

To clear this up more tan a year after i posted it, i ended up taking the crank to our universities machine shop and the crank is in fact bent/misaligned. Looks like time to find a new one.

I wonder when I suffered that contusion that's got me convinced that I've taken apart a dozen or so m10's that had unmarked rod caps...

...and I further wonder, then, why I bothered to mark them as I took them apart?  If they were already marked...

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but it has some good info on engine building and I wanted to redeem Toby a little on the issue of stamped connecting rods. 

 

While looking at my rods I noticed that mine were marked not with the cylinder number, but what I'm guessing is a weight group. The other side was blank.  These were from a '74 tii, but it had a factory replacement block at some point. They probably had several different labeling methods used over the years, and one may have included not stamping them at all.

Rod weight groups are identified by painted dots on the rod. These are just random numbers stamped onto the rod so you don’t mix up rod components. All the rod numbers should be installed on the same side when reassembling the motor.
