What dealer originally sold your 02?

Mines a little different. I purchased my '73 about 10 years ago from the original owner (she was 90) and she took factory delivery in Munich after placing her order in Australia in late '72.

Have all the original factory transfer papers.

As Steve has eloquently stated several times, BMWs coming to the US before January 1975 were imported by Hoffman and came to the nearest port, not New York. Hoffman did not have the right to import cars to Canada, those were imported by Vancouver Distributors, at least for the West Coast. Canada did however get all the features that US cars got including side markers and big bumpers beginning in 1974.

Thank you, Chris,

I'm only willing to explain fifty more times that each and every U.S.-bound '02 was NOT -- I repeat, NOT -- flown to NYC, and given a room at the Plaza until it could be trucked to Peoria, or Boston, or San Francisco! U.S.-bound '02s, AFTER legal title was delivered to Hoffman Motors, shipped to a U.S. Port of Entry (POE) proximate to the retail dealer and then, by truck, from the POE to the retail dealer.

The fastest documented shipment I've seen was six weeks from manufacturing date to customer delivery (I'm guessing it spent four-ish weeks on the ship from Germany to Elizabeth, NJ). That's my very early '70, VIN 1668093, which was manufactured September 8, 1969, and delivered October 18, 1969, at H.A. Boyd of Lebanon, PA, certainly a car that came through Elizabeth, NJ. I was the second owner of this car. Below are the BMW Archives report and the service booklet entries documenting that six-week period.

Regards,

Steve

how were you able to obtain the additional information about your car? I'd love to figure out the key number for my trunk and doors.

Examine all the keys you received with your car. Do any of the keys have key codes on them? If yes, BINGO. Failing that, I believe you can find the same key codes on the car's lock cylinders -- warning, some disassembly required. The service booklet, and often the Owner's handbook itself -- which originally accompanied each car -- had information recorded. Does your car have any old service stickers on the door jambs? Does the radiator have any old service tags welded to the tanks or frame? You've just got to scrounge around!

Regards,

Steve

The easiest way is to remove the trunk lock cylinder. The key code is stamped on the housing.

Stupid questions to follow: trunk and door locks are the same? Locksmith can make these or dealer only? Thanks.

Not the same.  Not dealer only.  Best to use the search function (plenty of previous threads) or start a new thread on this topic vs. getting this one off track.

I am the third owner of a 1969 2002. I purchased it off Craigslist last summer from an attorney in Sarasota. She acquired it from the original owners estate that she settled. The car was in the garage in a non running condition. She had it towed to her garage where it sat for 7 years. Her intent was to restore it, but it never happened. It is numbers matching, sunroof, Colorado in color, and automatic(soon to be manual) transmission.

It was purchased new at Bavarian Autohaus in Clearwater on 10/29/69. It was titled as a 1970, however it is clearly a 1969 given the flush turn signals, non-sport steering wheel which came on 1970 only and ti models. Also, lacking are the rear reflectors above the rear bumper and unique side view mirror to pre 1970's.post-40243-0-39295600-1453766013_thumb.jpost-40243-0-86324300-1453766027_thumb.j

I did a bit of research on Bavarian Autohaus and it appears they were in business from 1969 to 1977. Here is a full page newspaper ad announcing their grand opening lol!

No, the trunk lock is a standalone key. The ignition and door locks, however, share a single key.

Find out the manufacturing date -- delivery dates don't tell much -- by sending the VIN to BMW Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com). If it was manufactured after July 1969, it was a 1970 model. My '70, VIN 1668093, was manufactured September 8, 1969, and had -- I totaled it in 1974 -- all the characteristics you describe, including flush turn signals and red-center rear lenses. Given the September 8 manufacturing date, it was a very early 1970 model, delivered to the original owner -- I was the second -- on October 18, 1969. I still have one of the front turn signals, and the taillights, dated August 18, 1969 (removed prior to my recklessness, as I, cleverly, no doubt, swapped lights from a '72 tii parts car so the car would be more....modern!).

Nothing is ever as clear as we hope it will be!

Steve
