Wow!

Mark posted this Wisconsin Craig's List ad for a 1968 '02:

I can't resist scrutinizing ads for early 1600-2s and 2002s. Looking to confirm or deny my suspicions, I found the following thread, discussing other early '02s, including Mike S.'s approximate VIN cut-off for 1968 versus 1969 models.

VIN 1660016 could be the earliest 2002 known by this forum. My wife is just recovering from my purchase of the '73 tii in June 2014, so will someone PLEASE buy the Wisconsin car and NOT turn it into an M2 or track car? This could well be the earliest surviving U.S. 2002. And it appears to be an original Polaris car with a factory sunroof! Yeah! If you're having a tough time recognizing the significance of that, just imagine what Porsche collectors would be doing if it were the earliest surviving U.S. 911, and it had a factory sunroof to boot! You got it: hand-to-hand combat.

Oh, yeah, please DON'T throw out those original brake components, just because they were quirky, problematic, and parts haven't been available since...uh...1975; I'll bet White Post Restorations can restore the originals!

Regards,

Steve

Wow! Indeed.

However, it is the 2nd oldest that we know of.

1660013 (also with sunroof) was on Ebay a couple of years ago in your neck of the woods Steve (Atlanta), although, condition-wise, 1660016 has a better chance of survival.

Hmmm...? Earlier car? Or more complete car? Two good colors and both with factory sunroofs!

are factory sunroofs that popular with 2002 buyers? its my least favorite feature on mine. sorry to go off topic

People love them or hate them! But, yes, I do believe a factory sunroof adds value to any '02 -- despite the higher incidence of rocker panel rust in sunroof examples. And because the earliest examples, and the latest examples, of a given car model are often the most collected, I believe the value of this feature -- any factory "option" for that matter -- is enhanced when it's found in these more collectible examples.

Yeah I think more chance of rust and less headroom add value.

:D:P

That's unfair, Ray!

You've left out wind noise and air turbulence.

Best,

I want an early car, but that looks like a big job to restore properly. The car would be safe with me because I already have an M2 and a track car :) Edited by kris

Original Polaris Car, you can see the Polaris paint peeking through on the shots of the hood.

All I'm saying is it isn't Polaris now, the pics are definitely yellow.
