Steve, Thanks so much for that link. What a great reference point. Now I don't feel so bad about changing from red to black. Will you be going to Monterey?  We have about 8 cars going, that I know of,from here in Denver.  dq

No Monterey for me, Dan, at least not this year!

Best regards,

Steve

Perfectly original early '67 1600.  Schwarz exterior, schwarz interior panels/carpet and schwarz seats.  It has never been painted.  This car did go through Hoffman but was not caught under the umbrella of a US spec car -- side marker lights, DOT goodies, headrests, smog equipment, etc.  So, Schwarz cars did and still do exist in all of their simple elegance.

It's beautiful!  Thanks for sharing.  The strap-style grab handles on the B pillars (as opposed to solid fixed handles above the rear quarter windows) even suggest a sunroof.  Smog pumps, of course, did not appear until 1968 and both sidemarkers and headrests did not appear until January 1, 1969.  But the European license plate lights are, indeed, unusual -- but not unheard of -- on an early U.S. 1600-2.  Is it a 6-volt car manufactured before September-ish 1967?

What's your VIN?  Have you been following Anders' 1966 Bible?

Congrats and regards,

Steve, yes it is pre-September and was built in May.  The rear bumper lights are original.  Technically this is a 1600, not 1602 or 1600-2.  Good catch on the strap grab handles - it does have a sunroof.  Apparently 6-volts was enough to get things going back then :)  I have only found one non-original part on the car and will upload a pic tomorrow ... you'll like it.

So it's a 152XXXX car.  Sunroof versions are especially rare on these early examples, not to mention Schwarz versions!

I had a '67 6-volt back in the early '70's and 6 volts was plenty until temperatures dropped to 20-ish degrees -- which they did in our Pennsylvania winters -- and then 6 volts was not enough!  ?

1600-2 was simply a factory designation for all 2-door 1600's to distinguish them quickly from 4-door 1600's.  And most of the riveted-on metal VIN tags (on the right inner fender) actually show "1600-2" on the tag, like VIN 1523469, manufactured April 28th, 1967 and sold on eBay (you have to page through the photos to see views of the VIN tag):

And then your example is a life-long CA car?  Fabulous find!  More photos are in order!

Regards,

Steve

Hey Steve,

It is in the 152 group and precisely #1522827.  Yep it's got a hole in the roof :) as well as being triple schwarz.  Agreed on the voltage - not winter friendly but not impossible to live with.  We rarely see sub-30 weather here in Northern California, so 6V systems are not horrible to live with but they do need to be in good working order.  There has always beeen some confusion as to the model nomenclature through the years but as you know it's simpler than complicated.  This example is a life-long California Bay-Area car, now happily living close to Lake Tahoe.

This is NOT from my old '67; it's simply the closest in my collection of images of window stickers to your car's VIN.  If you don't have the original window sticker, this provides a pretty good image of the original as well as the original pricing and equipment.  If your car is a Bay Area car, it probably was a San Fransisco Port of Entry car, as was the car to which the attached sticker belonged.

Regards,

Steve

Hey Steve,

Nice invoice - Hans VW was down in Sacramento for a few years back in the day.  I do not have the original sales invoice for this car ... yet, though ya never know what the future might deliver to your doorstep.  The only non-original piece that was on the 1600 was the 'Carter' fuel filter pictured below.  I removed it when I first got the car but will probably reinstall it at some point.  Humans are suckers for nostalgia -- me included.
