Shipping weight of an M10 engine block

Recommended Posts

For the oft asked question: "How much does an M10 engine block weigh?"

Here's your answer.

Bare engine block with main caps installed, and tii front timing cover in a sturdy wooden crate: 138 lbs.

Just under Fed Ex' "freight" limit.

No crankshaft. No cylinder head, no pistons.

Shipping cost from Pittsburgh to Memphis TN = $122.00. It would have been $250-450 if it had been above the 150lb limit.

138lbs full of F Bomb goodness.

And now….. I wait.

As to the block itself, it can weight almost #100

(yes, Byron, I KNOW that's really heavy)

or as little as #80 for an E30 version.

Stone:

I've had such poor experiences with local Western PA machine shops, that I'm turning to an old contact (from my days as an international parts guy of mystery) at Memphis Motorwerks, for the boring and inspection/balancing of the rods/pistons/pins. Having a Mahle trained local guru perform the final honing.

Pistons will be 89.97 Mahle 10:1 Euro tii units.

The guys at Memphis M'Werks know the cars…they know M10s…and they know tii specific block wear patterns. I trust them 100%.

Rumor has it, their cylinder head specialist performs M10 magic, too…but the headwork will have to wait until my wallet recovers. I just made the first of many future PB&J sandwiches, today.

About 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. If Memphis comes through for me on this (as I expect them to), I'll be sending the *big dollar* customer work their way as well.

Home town is Edinboro (15 miles south of Erie) and I'm currently living in Harmony / Zelienople. The most wholesome little town in the state. I miss Baltimore every day though (lived there 21 years).

That's gotten kind of nice up there.

I grew up a few hours north of you,
