I wonder how many different colors Bosch had for the plastic top on the red coils that were actually red?

I would call this one NOS (new old stock).  Red with a gray plastic top.  Made in Germany.  I've seen tan tops, brown tops, black tops, but never gray.  How about the box?

Example of a black topped one.  No 'Made in Germany' label.  Probably Brazil.

I have never seen gray either.  I have seen a red topped red coil.

Now you need a gray cap and rotor to go with your coil.

It is important that all the bakelite be the same color, for optimum performance. ;)

Notice that they used both orange and black filler material over the resistor portion of the rotors.

This must be for when you are running a black cap with an orange topped coil, or vice versa.

Mismatched colors would be a deduction at Pebble Beach... :)

The one in the '71 is red with a black top...not sure if it has a Made in Germany mark.

Ya, you'd better have matching plug wire ends at Pebble Beach

Just for grins, I like to weigh the various ignition components.  I never ever use the cheapo caps with aluminum innards.  Only copper or brass.  All three of the caps in the first photo have different weights. Lightest on the left, heaviest on the right.  The only marking on the gray cap is a tiny little number 6 on the inside.  The black one only has a little number 1 next to that terminal on the outside.  Both of them appear to be quality parts, but apparently not made by Bosch.

Here are the weights of the five caps I checked:

1) generic with aluminum terminals   99.9g

2) Bosch with copper                       107.2g

3) German Bosch with copper        115.9g

4) Black generic with copper           116.7g

5) Gray generic with brass              123.1g

so, there you have it.

Here is a new Red coil that I put in about four years ago. It is not red except for the label which is wearing off but has the same part number on the bottom and the same ohm reading which is 1.8 ohms

Here is a used vintage made in Germany Red coil that I am running now, all red.

With the 123.

All in all, the important part on a Red coil is not the color but that it measures 1.8 ohms and should be used with a 1.8 ohm resistor.
