I can't believe BMW still makes these things - at least I hope they still do.  I just ordered one, so we'll see.  Does anyone happen to have a photo off a 1973 vin plate?  I want to try and stamp the new one with the proper info if I can.  Since the only thing left on my original one is the vin number itself, I'm guessing the rest of the information must have been printed on as opposed to stamped on?  Any info on this is greatly appreciated...thanks.

My original VIN plate is a badge of Patina'd honor, in the freshened up engine bay. I have a newVIN tag in my stash, but I just can't bring myself to install it. It wouldn't seem right, on my own car. I already regret replacing the "fjord" decal, as it's a different font than current offerings being sold, and the new ones all say "fjord-metallic". I'll be fixing that eventually. After I'm done licking my wounds from my parts bills.

VillaBMW--your car is only 83 cars away from mine, so chances are it was built around 18 Dec 1972.  Do you know where it was sold new?  Mine came from Mill Valley CA.

Mike - I don't know about new, I bought the car in '83 in Houston, Tx.

Yeah. I know what you mean about the patina. I'm going so deep on this thing - bare metal, inside, outside, underneath- all of it. I have all the new stickers for when the time comes. It might be cool to put the original tag back on the car now that you mention it.

Everyone gets to choose their own "threshold of pain", the point at which the appearance of an un-restored component really bothers them.  My '73's VIN tag (below) is fine with me, as is, and even after the car is re-painted.  And Paul's car's VIN tag would be fine with me, as well: it actually looks nicer than mine.  But your blank VIN tag is beyond my current comfort zone:  I would commission a really good duplicate!

Steve

Interesting...on my 'Typ" it says '2002/2002tii USA' for a '74 tii.

I may be mis-remembering, but I believe I've even seen that on some 1975 model year cars, even though there were no U.S. 1975 tii's.  Maybe they just got more practical as production wound down and started using multipurpose VIN tags.

I believe all USA '02s ('74, '75 & '76) had the BMW 2002/2002tii VIN plate. A '75 & '76 example below.

Thanks, as always, Les!

My '76 falls into that February to May 1976 group of '02's imported without a riveted-on metal VIN plate, so I didn't even want to guess what the norm was for '76!

Best regards,

Steve
