Worlds best BMW 2002, an E30 M3?

Whenever I drive my 88 E30 M3 I think this is the worlds best 2002. After being focused on the road and I look at the dash I expect to see vintage gauges and the 02 parcel shelf.

Perhaps, maybe, a BMW engineer in 1984 drove his flared 16V Schnitzer street 2002 to the office and said "we really need to make one of these!'

They are definitely related.

That is why some of us make M2's.  all the panache of a 2002, and quicker around a track than an e30 m3....

Whenever I drive e30 m3's I think,  "this is a great car.  Imagine how much better it would be if it was 400lbs lighter. ..."

BMW's advertising in 1991 actually presented the E30 318is as "the 2002 of the 90s" --not as fast as an M3, but with the same suspension and a really revvy little twin cam, they're a ball to drive...

OK,  I know I am going to get blasted for this, but I have a tendency to compare my 1600 to my '99 318ti.  Just like the way the M44 revs (up to 7000 rpm now that it has been flashed by Barrie at Midnight tuning, plus it is set up for autocross).  I have an '02 E46 and its nice, fast, and fun, but not nearly as fun as the 318 and nowhere near as fun as the 1600.  The E36 318ti is kind of a mix of a car with the rear suspension that is closer to an E30.  When I am working under it, it reminds me of the 1600.  When I rate all of the cars I have owned, the 1600 is still my favorite of all time and the E36ti is right behind it.  I am hoping I will be driving the 318 in 20 more years, it really is a blast (and quite versatile with that hatchback!)
