1972 BMW 2000tii Touring Alpina on BaT

Very cool and rare to find publicly for sale, with paperwork.  I owned once upon a time a set of the AlpinA rear disc brakes (assembly).  It was not only the brake rotors and calipers but the trailing arms as well (at least my set up had trailing arms), only thing special on the trailing arms was that they lowered the spring perch by about an inch/inch and a half and they were boxed tii style (the arms on this car don't appear to be lowered).  They also used a Porsche 914/6 brake caliper that had provision for the E-brake and then used an Alpina vented brake rotor.  I still regret having sold that set-up to this day.  it is one part I have never seen offered on ebay, second hand through brokers etc.,  Since it was so expensive, I am guessing they didn't make that many.  Cool beans.

I am not a "touring guy".  Never have been.  But this is first touring I wouldn't kick out of bed.  The Alpina equipment WITH documentation makes the world of difference to me.

Nick, you do realize that this an auction right?

Within the first day it was already up to $ 25k.

With another 6 days to go, I'm fairly certain that bidding insanity will go full-tilt on this rare little piece of Buchloe history...

No bonnet earth strap!!!!

The Chassis plate looks a bit odd with USA on it.

No E1/E2 sticker. When did they come in?

John,

The car has been repainted and stickers applied post-repainting.  Clearly the Chamonix paint sticker suggests the "sticker applier" was not an '02 specialist.  And I have never seen a T 51 brake booster sticker in this car's location; it is generally mounted on the brake booster.  (And aren't all tii brake boosters of the ....-301.4 variety, also suggesting this sticker was from a generic U.S. '02 kit?)    Whoever handled the repaint simply purchased a set of stock U.S. '02 decals and applied them to the repainted car.  Easy to fix!

But I don't have a good explanation for the odd riveted-on chassis VIN plate.  It's, as you suggest, a Euro-spec car, a Euro-spec VIN, a 2000tii, but with a VIN plate that reads "2002tii" and "U.S.A."  Since it was known from early on that the car was going to be U.S. Federalized, did BMW choose to utilize one of their U.S.-style plates?  I notice that the October 12, 1972 letter from the broker (Phil) to the original purchaser (Brad) mentions sealed-beam headlights and side markers lamps but there is no mention of the U.S. instrumentation.  Were those installed at the factory, along with the surprising U.S.A. VIN plate?  Was "2000" too confusing for the Federalization process, since they were essentially importing a 2002tii, and not a 2000 sedan?  Or, is the VIN plate simply a replacement?  Although the plate looks so pristine it could be a replacement, the stamped VIN and weight numbers look pretty darned authentic.  Nonetheless, I'd probably favor the idea that the VIN plate is a replacement.  So....

If the original owner is still alive, I'd bet many of these questions could be quickly and easily answered!

Regards,

Steve

It reportedly sold for $36,500 at the Bonham auction 3 years ago. With 6 days to go it could get above that.

Steve,

The weights are incorrect for a Touring. The weights on that "replacement" VIN plate are for a tii sedan.

The 3 Touring weights are 1450, 700 & 780.
