Just to be clear, bmx316 has an E21 head currently. The E21 head was Introduced on Euro-spec e21 cars and was installed on all U.S.-spec 1976 model-year, 49-state version 2002's.  An E12 and an E21 are somewhat similar and might work with the same low-compression (8.0:1), flat-top pistons, but they are not identical.

Agreed, I havn't seen an e21 head up close and personal but in pictures it appears to have a lot of e12 characteristics.   heres a link to a good discussion pistons, heads and blocks.

here is one on ebay. looks like 1977 head. only a couple pictures. ask for deck height measurements and see if they agree to pressure test prior purchase. located in Northridge CA

If it came off a '78 320i (e21), it won't likely be drilled for a mechanical fuel pump, but any machine shop can easily rectify that.
