A pair of extremely rare door sill covers in very good condition (no cracks).   Rubber seals available at extra cost, 'though you probably know that new are available.     Offers invited.

Well......I'm confused. Your pictures show the style of door sill cover that actually covered the sill/rocker. These were on the later cars, like my '74 Touring, and are (I believe) readily available new for around $85 each.

The "rare" ones are the early style that basically hold the carpet and the lower seal and do not cover the sill/rocker.

The even "rarer" ones are the metal/alloy style that I had my first '02 (1971) and stupidly did not keep.

You and me both....  I have been given mixed messages from both owners and suppliers on this.   The recognised experts in Europe are Walloth $ Nesch in Germany.  I will contact them and get back to you, and everyone else following this thread.

To help resolve any confusion on the 'sills saga' I asked Walloth & Nesch of Germany, the universally recognised experts and suppliers of classic BMW parts.

Alexander Nesch confirms the sills in my photo are for 02s up to Aug '73 (from Sep '71 presumably) and are no longer available new.   He states that the sills in the photo posted by 'Esty' were fitted to cars manufactured beween Sep '73 and Aug '75.

So, given the response to my original claim to rarity, it would seem that my sills are rare in Europe, but not in the USA, where they appear to be available for as little as $10 !  I will be telling my 02 buddies...

Hope that helps.

That is ass-backwards!

The sill/rocker covers in Esty's photo are the early ones (NLA I believe), and the ones you posted are the later ( maybe available) as fitted to my Nov '73 Touring and my 3 '76 USA sedans.

You should contact Jaymic in the UK and ask them.....after all Mike Macartney (Owner) wrote the book on 2002s.

Interestingly, I spoke to Jaymic before setting up this post last week.   Both Fay and Pete at Jaymic confirmed that the sills I posted are for cars up to Aug '73...  So, back to square one.  Can it be that the USA and Europe differed in spec in this regard?

I have now contacted Michael Cahsel of Germany, another specialist who, like Jaymic, deals only in 02s.  Michael's wife and business partner, Anita, sent me the attached photo stating that the bottom of the 3 types in the picture was fitted to cars manufactured up to Aug '73, which are available from them (used only), and for $178 Euros the pair, would you believe.  I have asked them to confirm this and the dates when the top and middle examples were fitted in the hope we can get to the bottom of this saga...

Hmmm...

I'm open to new information!  But first I'll need to jettison 43 years of what must be misconceptions. My '76 (first photo below) came to me new -- July 30, 1976 -- with the broad plastic sill protectors shown in your original post.  It's a U.S.-spec car, manufactured April 23, 1976 (VIN 2742541).  And I must admit I thought all square taillight cars came with these broad plastic sill protectors.  OK, at least all U.S.-spec square taillights: I didn't give much thought to Euro-spec square taillights back in the day!

At the same time (second photo below), the 1972 U.S. accessories catalog shows the (rare) stainless steel sill protector designed to AUGMENT the narrower sill protector used on round taillight cars -- also shown in the photo, behind the stainless steel protector.  My '73 -- purchased just two years ago -- on the other hand, came to me instead with the broad plastic sill protectors -- WHICH I'VE ASSUMED WERE NOT ORIGINAL.

U.S. vs. Euro?  I don't know.  But parts listings are not always correct and manufacturers -- including, certainly, BMW -- frequently substitute "functionally equivalent" parts as replacement parts, particularly when such parts are offered long after the car's manufacture.  An example?  I was thrilled to discover that BMW still offered fuel tanks for round tailight tii's.  Ordered and received one.  Bravo!  A year later I removed it from the box only to discover that it was, indeed, a tii fuel tank, but with the cropped rear corner that I associate solely with U.S. square taillight cars.  According to BMW, it fits the round taillight models, and that's correct, but it's certainly not identical to a round taillight tii's original fuel tank...

Regards,

Steve

Thanks for that Steve, very interesting.   A picture paints a thousand words and your photos are all that should be need to resolve this issue, which they may yet do.   I will circulate them with the sources helping in this, in the hope we can conclude on it.  On the other hand your experience with the fuel tank could be prophetic...

My first 02 was a tii in the early 70s (1972), sadly only for several years, and I have but two photos of the car, neither of which shows the sills and I have no memory of same.  No mobile phones then...

It is telling that Michael Cahsel is selling these wide sills for over 170 Euro - used, while they appear to be available in the US for as little as $10?!   I am relaxed about whether or not I have paid over the odds for the sills I now have; the important thing for me is to get a hold of the sills which are right for my car.   So on we go..  I will let you know how I get on.

Regards

David

As if there is a watching brief on this topic, I have received from Michael Cahsel (Germany) the attached photo, which identifies three styles of grill as follows (presumed to be Sep to Aug).  Fay at Jaymic now concurs:

Top - up to 71

Middle - 71 to 73

Bottom - 73 on

This runs contrary to the information I have been given thus far.  And by the same sources I should add, so clearly my initial query was misunderstood.

I am of course happy to accept this latest advice, which is consistent with your own experience, and I must now set about finding a pair of the 'middle' sills in the picture.   Any ideas...?!

Regards

David

P.S.  Finally, those following this thread will not be surprised to hear that my initial post is withdrawn, with apologies.  Given they appear to be available in the US for $10 a pop, these are not to be bought at European prices...

I have received the attached photo from Michael Cahsel.  Jaymic have now come back to say that they believe the three sills in the picture are from the following years of manufacture (from Aug to Sep presumably):

Top  -  up to 71

Middle  -  71 to 73

Bottom  -  73 to 77

Not entirely consistent with earlier advice.  It would appear my earlier query was misunderstood.  The latest advice is sufficiently in step with your experience to convince me, at least.   I am now looking for a  'middle' pair of sills.   Any ideas...?!

P.S.  Those following this thread will not be surprised to hear that I have withdrawn my initial post, with apologies.   At potentially $10 a pop in the US, Europe is clearly not the place to be buying '73 plus sills...  D

David,

Thanks for the follow-up.  This is consistent with my memories...

By '71, I believe they're referring to April 1971, when the Modell 71 appeared.  And by '73, I believe they're referring to August 1973, when the Modell 73 (a.k.a., square tailight) appeared.

Selfishly, as I briefly contemplated the possibility that the broad plastic sill protector might actually be "correct" for my October 19, 1972 tii (VIN 2762757), I actually thought, to myself, "Wow, this would relieve me of having to find a pair of rare round taillight sill protectors!"  Oh well!

Regards,

Steve

Thanks Steve for the follow-up info.  I am also pleased to have ensured your sanity is intact...

Sorry to have burst your bubble.   Wishful thinking can be a dangerous thing, but I am still now hoping you are going to conjure up a set of '72 sill covers for me from somewhere...

Regards

David
