The Lancia Delta HF Integrale. The last version from 1992 had 215 horsepower in stock trim, and several rally versions were known to have in excess of 700 bhp. Good luck finding one stateside.

Another european gem was the Ford Escort Cosworth in Europe. I think stock they were 225 bhp if memory serves.

My daily driver wrx impreza has a pretty impressive 4 banger as well, although it's a flat boxer and probably not what you want for your secret application.

Mitsubishi Rally Division makes some pretty scary 4 bangers as well.

I'm with Al C. about the VW 2.0 16V, not uncommon to see 200+ hoss from them, on sidedrafts. The only four cylinder suggestion I hav ethat hasn't been mentioned is the GM Quad Four. Outside that (and what the others have mentioned), what's the reasoning for hanging on tho the four cylinder format? A rotary with the second generation RX7 ignition setup actually sounds almost like a normal engine, and gives weight (and weight distribution) advantages. Also, the mazda 5-speed should be a fairly easy fit. A GM 60 degree v6 can make alot of power for little money, is not that heavy, and the packaging works. And the T-5 5-speed is cheap and plentiful. Now, for my grand finale, I suggest VW TDI for consideration. Not as easy, but so cool, with power and torque exceeding most M10 owner's dreams.

Blew it up with 187K. Got a good 2L block from an Audi (VW)put the 8V head on it with a Techtonics (great VW people) 268 cam and their SS exhaust. Huge torque. It would clean up my 94 Jetta GLX (VR6) up to about 4krpm. Fun fun car!

If you look closer, you'll see Jetta GLI/GTX, AND B3 Passat. We never had a GLI in Canada with a 16V, and you guys never had a GTX.

I have a Vauxhall Calibra 2.0L 16V and its a beast the engin is a real performer. I would guess that you are going to put the engin in a smaller car (eg nova) that would be impressive but dont forget to sort the breaks out smaller cars breaks dont do well stopping a heavy 2.0L engin. Anyway good look hope you get it all up and running.
