Stock rims, need 165x 13 tires ?

Road trip

Recommended Posts

Not everyone's solution, but the original tires on 90%+ of U.S.-delivered cars remain available, just expensive:

Coker Tire is the U.S. distributor, Longstone Tyres is the U.K. distributor.  Depending on exchange rates and whether shipping is free, it can often be cheaper for U.S. residents to get them through Longstone.

Steve

If you don't want to spend the high $$, Tires-easy lists of couple of off-brand tires in 165/80 13:

If your rims are 5"x13", you might consider 185/70 13.  I have the Toyo Extensa in 185/70 13 on one of my cars and have been happy with them:

Online suppliers like Tire Rack & Discount Tire Direct can be great, but they aren't the only games in town.  Check with your local tire shops, like Goodyear or Firestone dealers - you might be surprised at what they can get you.

Do you happen to know which manufacturer was for the Euro crowd for these size tires?

Recently at Legends, the Michelin rep told me that they make about 1 run per year of 165-13 XAS tires for Coker.  Make sure that you are sitting down when you see the prices!

My local tire store, last time I asked a few years ago, told me they could find about 15 types of 165-13 tires.  I will confirm that a 185-70_13 tire on a 5" rim will NOT fit into a 2002 trunk without pushing up the spare cover.

It's funny, I've found that the depth of the spare tire wells are not all created equally.  The 185/70 13 spare on a 5x13" early tii alloy wheel fits just fine in the trunk of my 73tii, but the same spare doesn't fit in the spare tire well of my 74tii without pushing up the tire cover boards.

I've got a 185-13 spare and it does push up the spare cover.

I have a road test on the 1600 from Car and Driver, Feb. 67, it lists the tires as Continental Record, 6.00-13, 2 ply nylon tubeless on 4J x 13 wheels.  My 1600 which is not as old as yours (1562947) came with a radial continental tube type tire on 4 1/2 inch wheels.  Shortly after I bought the car 3/69,  I began hearing about the Michelin XAS.  Not sure if they were on the new cars in the showroom or not, but maybe.

Before I sold my 1600 I bought a set of Vredestein 13's for he stock wheels.  They look period correct for the most part, with the old style tread pattern.  They were about $75ea, vs $225ea for the Michelin XAS!  I'd go with them.

John,

This seems to be consistent with what many others have found: the round taillight cars appear to have slightly more depth to the the spare tire well than the square taillight cars.  Explanation?  Who knows?

+1

I believe the XAS was invented in 1965 or 1966 and found its way, gradually, onto lots of Euro-delivery cars as well.  The earliest window sticker I have showing XAS's on an '02 is for VIN 1563974 -- a U.S. car -- manufactured probably in April or May 1968.  But yours, Lisa. probably came with Continental bias-ply tires, exactly as tahoedon described.  Maybe there are European dealers of specialty historical tires -- the European equivalent of Coker Tire -- with something akin to the Continentals, but I'd probably just go with XAS's and tell critics to pound dirt.

Regards,

Steve

After some research I think the Vredestein's are the PC for the Euro spec cars... but the size for the Vreds only come in 145 x 13's  not 165... ho hum..... unless I get white wall Vreds that are 165 x 13's .... !!?!? LOL!
