After some research I think the Vredestein's are the PC for the Euro spec cars... but the size for the Vreds only come in 145 x 13's  not 165... ho hum..... unless I get white wall Vreds that are 165 x 13's .... !!?!? LOL!

Just put the wheels on backwards.

No one will know!

:D

Face the whitewalls to the inside.

Cheers,

Ray

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P

I found this handy link:

http://www.automobile-catalog.com/tire/1968/131990/bmw_1600.html

And while the 1600 is indicated as having been shod with the 6.00 S 13 bias ply tires at the factory, radials aren't such a bad idea.  "Back in the day" they were about 50% MORE in terms of price, but their construction resulted in better fuel mileage.

The link also lists the relative tire sizes from bias ply to radial.  Note that the differences are in TENTHS OF ONE PER CENT of the tire DIAMETER - which translates to a small fraction of an inch.  On numerous websites where I've entered the stock 6.00 S 13 tire size, the comparable size pops up as 145 R 13.

And on the link I posted, the first comparable size is 145 R 13.  It is LESS in DIAMETER by  0.9%.

Farther down the list it indicates that 155/80 R 13 and 165/75 R 13 sizes are also considered to be acceptable alternatives.  Both are 0.9% LARGER in diameter than the stock, bias-ply originals.

All this said, you can go with 6.00 S 13 bias ply whitewalls or slightly smaller/larger radials.  The choice is yours.

Also, according to this web catalog, if this were a 2002, it would have come from the factory with 165 R 13 radials.

Edit:  If there is any question regarding the beginning of Michelin XAS production, it is 1965 as mentioned here:

And here's the specs page from the May 1968 English-language brochure for the 1600-2 and 2002 -- 2002 production began around January 1968 -- showing radials as standard equipment on 2002's, but optional on 1600-2's.  As I've said above, I wouldn't hesitate to mount 165HR13 XAS's on my '66 1600-2 -- if I owned a '66 1600-2, which I don't!  ?

Regards,

Steve
