WTB: 'counter clockwise' Bosch distributor

Recommended Posts

For those with random stashes of parts..

Looking for a 4 cylinder distributor which turns counter-clockwise (thus, the arrow above/below the unit # on the distributor will point 'right' or counter-clockwise (sorry, that's fairly obvious)). Needs to have functional centrifugal advance mechanism, the rest isn't important.

Why? You ask? I've been given an M10 to get running, discovered it has a ccw camshaft, a ccw gear on the distributor but the unit itself is cw; hence, the advance won't work so far as I can figure (though it would do some interesting things, perhaps, under hard decel...?!?)

Thanks. -KB

I do not think what you are looking for exists.  The camshaft shaft is probably for an E21 320i( which had CCW gears on camshaft/distributor).  You need a good machine shop to change the gear on the camshaft from the CCW  to CW,  I've had to do this before, Sergio at Motorworks Machine, here in san diego, has done it for me numerous times.

Thanks, krauser

Just wondering, could you take the drive gear from a 320i dist and transfer it to a 2002 dist?   Would a stock 02 dist work going in the opposite direction?  Never tried it but it might work

Rick

That's what this engine has, actually. But thing is, the centrifugal advance is made to work in the clockwise direction - meaning, when turning counter-clockwise, there is no advance. (If you put one in your hands that'll make sense.) I've got an e21 unit coming, so, we'll see. -KB

The advance mechanism works spinning either direction, its all centrifugal force. It just retards the timing instead of advancing when spinning the "wrong" way.

Ken, couldn't you take a retard vacuum pot and "advance plate(retard plate)" out of a jfur unit to create the desired effect.

Well, technically, sure ... but centrifugal retard of the ignition timing isn't actually 'working' as intended. Imagine timing via the 'ball' method... -KB

I don't have to imagine, i repaired a 2002 with this exact situation once. Ignition timing that retards with rpm is undriveable.

Exactly- hence, the purpose of my original post (more time reading and less time telling what you know might be a benefit here). -KB
