I got a brand spankin' new BMW one sitting in my garage doing nothing....does it have to used? Maybe so, to match the patina of the rest?

Hi, just a comment. The early VIN cars had round plastic clips holding the belt trim on, not the x style clips. The opening on the back of the early trim was larger due to the size of the round clips. So if your car still has the round clips you will have to install the x clips in order to use the later style moldings.

I believe the 66 and 67 did not have rocker trim. [emoji6]

I was wondering the same thing about the rocker trim.  Checked a Feb 67 road test on the 1600 and it does not have rocker trim.  I will bring you a copy of the road test at Brisbane.  You might find it interesting.
