Is it my rose-colored glasses, or does it have a red-tipped Hirschman antenna ?

Not to rain on the parade, but as others have noted, the tin worm has been busy on this car (rust bubbles on the rear deck lid, lower doors and such...)  Larry, be sure to closely examine the rockers, shock towers and subframes... Take along a thin, refrigerator magnet and see if sticks to areas that may have body filler, like behind the rear wheels, the lower doors, etc... If it doesn't stick, you can bet someone has covered up something.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for you, but make sure you check these things to negotiate the best price.

Good luck!

McCartney book shows no RHD Tii Tourings, but there were 1537 built of Model 71 (September '71 - August '73) and 339 of Model 73 ( August '73 - April '74) for a total of 1876 RHD Tourings.  ( I bet Les will have more info about them)

Only a visit in person will tell you more.  Get the VIN when you go, Larry.  Check the VIN and engine #s match, too.

Very exciting stuff... I would make a plan to visit this weekend, without a doubt.

Number 1 negotiating tip: open the bonnet and act surprised that someone has removed the tii injection engine!

It morally stinks but you have to win them over for the right price. If they don't go for that, ask them where the twin Solex carbs are...

Single flag mirror = deduct $5000 from asking price. E30 bottle cap wheels another deduction but hopefully the stock steelies are there.

maybe picture distortion but looks like right side hood/fender dents to me.

All old old cars I run across are rust buckets.

  • 3 weeks later...

i got some bad news at the weekend.. im still coming to terms with it.. but the touring was sold under my nose

apparently someone spotted it in the barn at a family party and advised that he sell it to a BMW specialist, really gutted but, still hopeful that i can go and pick up the E21 and the E30 touring for a good price.

will keep you updated

I feel for you there. Bad luck.

Still, the other 2 would be some compensation. I would also like a nice e21 to follow me home.

i would like to get these two for a good price, clean up and sell the e21 and keep the e30 as a daily :)

I can relate to the anxiety.  I got a tip about an old BMW left behind by the elderly lady's son, it was in her garage and she was moving to Australia to live with him (I'm in northern CA).  Apparently he didn't know that much about the older cars and when he found some ugly rust on one of the quarter panels (that's the only place with bad rust though.  Weird) he gave up and parked it in her garage.  She didn't know what it was and wanted it hauled away and I couldn't ask the right questions to figure out what it was over the phone.  She'd have a friend take some photos and email them to me.  ... Three days later I get two photos...one of the front corner (a 2002!) and one of the right rear corner (a '73 tii!!!).  I told her I'll buy it, don't call anyone else and I'll be there tomorrow.  I couldn't sleep that night, borrowed my friend's car trailer and my wife and I drove four hours to get the car.  Let's just say I didn't just haul it away, but I did get quite a deal on it.  She was very happy and I was ecstatic.  It now sits fourth on my list of car projects.  LOL

BTW, having an E30 touring would be WAY high on the cool scale!  :)
