Trying to determine how many '68 1600 are still alive out there.  Registry is down so can't use that.

Any thoughts?, also have a sunroof, did most cars get those at the time?

Thanks,

So by looking at your serial number you 1968 was built at the end of 1967.  The book says all of them in the "first series" were 6-volt. Is yours?

By the way your car looks great!

Mine is a 12 volt. I'm not quite sure what date they switched over.

The switchover from 6-volt to 12-volt seems to have been roughly contemporaneous with the new U.S. 1968 model year, which generally includes cars manufactured September 1, 1967, or later.  I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that all 156xxxx cars are probably 1968 models and probably have 12-volt systems.  And U.S.-imported 153xxxx cars are certainly 1967 models and certainly had 6-volt systems originally.  I don't have sufficient data to opine on 154xxxx and 155xxxx cars, although I'd guess that most are 1967 models with 6-volt systems.  As with many BMW "transitions", there might not have been an absolute cut-off VIN.  If there was, someone here will know it!

Congrats to both of you!

Regards,

Steve

As far as I can decipher, according to the BMW Blue Parts book, all US 1600-2 & 2002 models had 12v systems.

Related to Generator/Alternator, Starter Motor & Coil

Euro LHD 1600-2 changed over to 12v at (6v) 1533867 - 1533868 (12v)

Euro RHD 1600-2 changed over to 12v at (6v) 1550269 - 1550270 (12v)

Maybe this helps?

Les,

I'm not completely clear on what you're saying by "all US 1600-2 and 2002 models had 12v systems".  I presume you're pointing to the emergence of separate VIN's for U.S.-spec cars.  When do separate U.S.-spec cars appear?  The 1968 model year?  Earlier?

Weren't all U.S.-imported '67 models "Euro" since there weren't separate U.S. VIN's at that time?  VIN 1530083, for instance, was a U.S.-imported '67, manufactured June 27, 1967.  Although appearing in Archives as a Euro-spec car, it was both 6-volt and a Hoffman Motors Corp U.S. import.

Do you have sufficient data to guesstimate a production date for 1533868?  It's obviously after June 27, 1967 (VIN 1530083) and before September 13, 1967 (VIN 1560300).

Best regards,

Steve

Steve,

Yes, I was thinking of US model cars. ie 1600-2 starting at 1560001 in Aug '67 and 2002 starting at 1660001 in Feb '68. Both after the "Euro" cars changed to 12v.

My guesstimate for 1533868 would be end of Jul '67, but this is purely based on 1533868 being around 60% of the 1600-2s produced in 1967. Not exactly scientific. However, it may be more likely that BMW switched after the factory holiday/vacation in '67?

Got it, Les!  Thanks.

By the by, I've got BMW Archives confirmation that VIN 1660016 (obviously, one of the first U.S. 2002's) was manufactured January 15, 1968.  So I'd gather that U.S. 2002 production began on or very close to that date.

Best regards,

Steve

I actually have conflicting info on the start of US 2002 production. I have that it was Feb '68, but, also that two US 2002s were built in '67 (Dec?) (one, at least, was a press car). So I guess Jan '68 would be a happy medium.

OK, I took the liberty of inquiring of BMW Archives regarding the first 12-volt 1600-2.  Here's the email. VIN 1533868 was manufactured August 18, 1967.  It was a Germany-delivered car but I think that's not particularly important.  So....on the basis of the blue parts book listings (which are generally correct, but not 100% bulletproof thanks to BMW's habit of using up old stock parts as they transition to a new design or feature), 12-volt cars begin on August 18, 1967.

As an aside, I wonder if any 1600-2 examples after VIN 1533868 (August 18, 1967) and before VIN 1560001 (between September 1 and September 13, 1967) were imported to the U.S.  And if so, were these 1967 or 1968 models for U.S. purposes?

As my second aside -- do you suppose I'm allowed two asides in one post? -- VIN 1533868 is an example of a mid-August car.  VIN 2762621, a U.S. 1972-model tii, similarly, was a mid-August car, manufactured August 14, 1972.  Given both the rarity of August manufacturing dates and our strong belief in the "August factory holiday", I never know quite how to explain these mid-August cars!  I don't think the factory opened up to produce one or two cars: there must have been more of these than we think!

Best regards,

Steve

I have a large amount of US e9 production dates and the VINs are not consecutive when it comes to build dates.  They can vary by as much as three weeks so I would assume 2002s are the same, e.g. 1600001 was probably not the first US 2002 built.  And the start of the US model year production could be July, August or September, it varies depending on when they sandwiched in the US cars into the line.  But, they were always the next calendar year models to comply with DOT/EPA requirements.
