The seller called them "panasport style"

Yes, I think they are Westerns.  Still a decent period correct wheel I think. If they are shank-style, they are most likely Westerns.

I painted and polished mine.  You can have lots of fun with color/polish combos.

Are you sure those are Rota wheels? They sure look like my Western wheels.

If so Western probably copied them.

Well I'd call them rota wheels but I could be wrong, you probably know a lot more about it than I do.

So, since people are interested (and input is still very much appreciated) I'll start making progress reports a little more frequent so they don't have to be so long.
Today I cleaned, scraped, grinded, wire wheeled and sandblasted the underside up to the back of the tranny and finished it off with more hammered black paint. I think the results turned out ok and ill feel a lot better about putting all my newly painted pretty stuff back in there.
I had a little time left at the end of the day so I decided to start playing around with some metal. Made myself a cardboard template, turned that into a part, fine tuned it a little bit and proceeded to template and cut out the bad spot on the passenger door. That worked out really well (in my opinion) and then I did the same with the little piece on the inside of the door also. It had a little hump to it which I replicated to the best of my abilities (probably fine tune it as I tack it into place.)
Someone had mentioned earlier on in this thread about providing pics of rust repair so people know I wasn't going to do some shotty patchwork repair. I hope this is a good start.
Oh, and I stopped at my sister's house this weekend and she had picked up this 71' vw bus which is pretty awesome. I can wait to get pics of the 02' with it. 19d2036b05d176567732bfc8d9301336.jpgfc5557c1483ec3d111becdf51330d8ca.jpgbfd33f4a8e9ffa840c4e5962b7c8c98f.jpg831dd2f14ceca5c421faa36cf4ec402f.jpg38e23acd8b9fb26ca241be15f83e082f.jpg608d7440d3dba427b7f9230f590faefa.jpgfadc94b1ad0e2fd406e8729cd952cfef.jpg48e1265b3b140c1e06e4ff5e830e7992.jpg9e4c8a1d700d7bcf89df5cdeeec9fd09.jpgc2c52bb65e8114f9314fe374a824b765.jpgc631898e8f6b128388bef68ef8489d21.jpgde0d0d2ea1f6a0b0c68f6aedff85d5bc.jpg3aaf4ee09dd0b3c613aa7a9e4e593dcd.jpg

Nice work, looking neat! At least you can face the door like this, lol. My granddad loves those VW vans, I think they are pretty awesome too. Only the market is collapsing a bit in Europa I think (in the netherlands at least) although im not sure about the States (i assume ur from there (?)) Anyway really nice and nice van! ;)

Ps this is what I did on my car the other day, im pretty much of an amateur as this is my first car..so I work slowly but precise (as I like to make myself believe)..

That's some pretty intense stuff you're dealing with there! That's probably more than i would have taken on. You'll probably be a metal pro by the time you're finished!

Lol, I did not even know a car could be this bad I had no clue it was gonna be like this haha. Any way, I have seen much worse cars on this forum, I saw the other day a car that had just this enormous hole in the wheel arch instead of metal lol. But yeah indeed, by the time I have finished I am sure I replaced half the car haha. I have still not looked at the other wheel arch as I need to get rid off the scheiwenbach on the left side..... Pray for me!

Ciao, JP

(blush)  Thanks.  Been my rolling WIP for 8 years.  Still not done!

The aux lights are Marchal.  the head lights are Hella Super7 with yellow film on the city light lens area.

Rear subrame reinstalled without issue.
New brake lines, shoes and cylinders.
This car really is just so easy and enjoyable to work on! What is the market like for someone that only restores 02s? I feel like I could do the next one in half the time and twice as nice! 11be932794cd784e2a69c2e2d1027399.jpgcb93ff9740585f4761986aee62a0590f.jpgc5ef64211e5054868bf7e8c4fe546222.jpg

Just found this thread. Loving it man, keep up posted on the progress of this resurrection! Inspirational!

Following.
Thanks for the feedback!
I've been busy the last couple of days so I haven't gotten a ton done in but a have knocked out a couple things.
I finished installing the remaining rear suspension parts and also bled the brakes. It was really good to see fresh new fluid coming out the new bleeder valves after seeing that old filthy fluid that was there when I started this project! I got the gas tank installed and buttoned up all the remaining fuel and smog lines. I made a new panel for the rear deck behind the back seats. Mine had basically turned to dust. I made a template, transferred that to 1/2" plywood then carpeted it black (long term goal is to convert to black interior).
I'm getting very close to the end of the mechanical phase of this project. I think I'll probably have it tagged and insured early next week! 36b0bf0f2634046a2626703137dc1189.jpg596733532a8a0969edc5c731ecf7ef24.jpgb276a439e6ba59d51b39a8e60585a6ea.jpgba1f78d476740e10e9a901eee8a99bcc.jpg
