I was hearing this annoying noise (like grinding) when opening and closing my car hood. So I decided to figure out what's up with it. Removed bonnet torsion bar out and did some cleaning and lubricating on pivoting sections. Noise is gone now and managed not scratch my aprons.

Silly things to a car that's not even roadworthy.

 On the '68-

Steelwool'd most of the front bumper. Hands started cramping so that stopped. Swapped out blacked out grilled for a set of all silvers that someone painted to look like the later style grilled. Flipped over the kidney grille that someone installed upside down. Adjusted the exhaust so that it doesn't rattle anymore.

On the '73-

began removing the siezed sunroof panel in hopes of salvaging a pass side cable for the '68.

This is much more pleasant to look at when I walk out to the garage.

Performed 600-Mile Service......after a 19-year rest.

My '76 completed 600 miles after 19 years of sitting on blocks in my garage.

The car was stored with the head off. I kept oil in the crankcase (overfilled to keep as much of the lower end submerged in oil) and periodically squirted oil onto the pistons and rotated the engine by hand.

The head was rebuilt in 1999 (3 new exhaust valves, 2 new intake valves, 8 valve guides and stem seals, 1 new rocker and 1 new rocker shaft) and served as a paper weight on my work bench until April of this year.

Here is what I did:

Torque head bolts to 55 ft./lbs.

Adjusted valves (cold) .006-.008"

Checked dwell angle:  60 degrees

Checked timing:  25 degrees (ball) @ 1500 rpm.  Note: Bosch distributor 0-231-176-059 (California model) with vacuum advance and retard disconnected.

Adjusted idle speed to 850 rpm

Checked manifold vacuum:  at idle = 20"Hg

Checked ported vacuum:  at idle = 0"Hg.  part throttle = 20"Hg

Oil and filter change:  Castrol GTX 20w50,  NAPA 1374 oil filter

Cleaned and checked plugs:  NGK BP5ES  gap: 028"

Stock motor with Weber 32/36, stock air cleaner/filter, Tii exhaust manifold, stock resonator and muffler, stock distributor with vacuum advance connected to PORTED vacuum on Weber.

Carb specs:   Primary/Secondary

Idle jets:      60 / 50

Main jets: 140 / 140

Air Corrector:  170 / 160

Emulsion tubes:  F50 / F50

Pump jet:  50EW / blocked

Electric choke, new gaskets and seals, new throttle shaft bearings, power valve, and brass float (float level 41mm), enrichment bushing blocked, new Pierburg fuel pump and Bosch in-line filter.

600 mile history (from 1st. start):

138,127 miles with 10w40 oil and BP6ES plugs and full tank of Chevron Supreme

138,303 miles.....10.5 gal gas.   176 miles = 16.8mpg.  Oil change to 20w50.

138,337 miles....Change plugs to NGK BP5ES (one range hotter...see pictures)

138,374 miles....Marvell Mystery Oil treatment (3 oz. in each cylinder and let soak for 4 days). Oil change to Mobil 1 10w30  to clean engine.

138,519 miles.....11.3 gal gas.  216 miles = 19.1mpg

138,727 miles.....10.2 gal gas.  208 miles = 20.4mpg. Oil change to Castrol GTX 20w50.

Notes: Car runs cool (temp gauge at 3 o'clock  even at 75mph on a 100 degree day). Original radiator! (newish water pump) new 80 degree thermostat.

Oil pressure:  Hot cruise (4K rpm) = 65psi.   Hot idle (850 rpm) = 25psi.

Car starts easily (cold or hot) and idles and runs smooth and strong.

Pictures show difference between BP6 (4 plugs) and BP5 plugs. The Marvell Mystery Oil treatment seamed to really free up the rings, and now the oil burn on heavy deceleration is almost non-existent.

If it's a 2002 (rather than a 1600-2), and it's wearing original or older side grilles, the factory grilles from the inception of the 2002 (January-ish 1968) until some time in the 1970 model year had factory-painted slats rather than the black anodized slat covers of later grilles.  It was a terrible idea as the factory paint quickly chipped off.  Just mentioning this as you might be witnessing remnants of the factory paint...

Regards,

Steve

You are correct in assuming that both cars are indeed 2002s. I had thought all raw/black grilled had added slats and that prior to that they were all raw. Learning something new everyday. Neither kidney grille have raw slats. All are anodized black.

just a pic of what the car looked like with the previously blacked out grilles.

Yes, Jake,

For some reason unknown to us, the center grilles seemed to be either 1600-2 grilles (all clear anodized aluminum) or 2002 grilles (black anodized slats), but the side grilles were all manufactured as 1600-2 grilles (all clear anodized aluminum) but were then modified (black paint early, black anodized slat covers later) for 2002 use.  ?

Even in-op, a round taillight 2002 looks SO much better with the correct grille treatment!

Regards,

Steve

Simple stuff, but the sort of preventive maintenance that keeps a 2002 running smooth.

1)  The wire bail that holds the connector into the back of the alternator:  it was bent the wrong way and would slip off the connector.  The connector would then slip backwards just enough to make the "L" light flicker.  So this morning I bent the bail just enough to have a tighter fit on the connector.  Problem solved.

2)  Removed positive & negative battery terminals.  Cleaned & scrubbed everything nice and shiny, then reinstalled everything nice and tight.

3)  Re-routed the KF fuel hose so as to be under the alternator, forward along the left frame rail and then up to the fuel filter adjacent to the radiator.  The hose had been looped around in a non-factory config ..... now it's factory config routing.

Cheers,

Carl
