Pulled the 5spd and lsd out of the donor car for my 02!

Pressure washer capped out on me but I was able to clean just enough off the diff to reveal the magic "s"!

Is the 7 digit number on the upper right of the block a vin? If so I'm guessing it came from an 02 (or equally old car) since it's only 7 digits? 97be042ef89c67be70f0cf010448737b.jpg&key=4225377fa5ebff4a0c75ec7f03f1c189959d33f9c82d47bf18ace86cfc11905924819ba32531dcdda1323cf610e9c0e7.jpg&key=ef9d92d36b1e9296944a532f10f052b167c73c2d1c43431611ce2ab5a1b6b9e3c45e2d2c63cf9373a95e4dc74e553498.jpg&key=14342d2ca6f385cc00038944ca45363d89374a3e62f8a1bd0c29a0c41dd9c914dace375e97472246da0fc3904dd25407.jpg&key=959cc4a0267e072a4947b0bf0caecaf995b8fc8066a6d2af9b0a27c459a38e3e8ea5287a582032f3dc977dd61417cd62.jpg&key=64eda620cabf2e348d98b49353a6f80c000091f15af50e6b9d390a67a40accd230491fb60d19b00b85a4c77292826cb3.jpg&key=abb8c6a96ad5243c2483939677c10fcabc89c44ee45c57314e1b59dcc02e4089

Started sorting the m2...

Changed the oil (what was in it was bad.)

New air filter (same deal- been there for a while.)

Pressure tested the cooling system to find a couple of leaks- just hose clamps!  Woohoo!  Still need to change all the hoses.

Started sorting the brake lights.  Still trying to understand which part of which wiring harness goes where. (So I bought a complete used e30 wiring harness to have lots of proper colored wire to redo what was done so it works a little better.)

Adjusted the throttle cable stop (it's just like a bicycle, so pretty straightforward if you understand it.)

Between some fresh oil, adjusting the throttle cable and driving it a little the engine is starting to loosen up and pull a little harder...

It's starting to grow on me.  And I love the way the 205/55-15s look- big sidewall and still on a big wheel...

Oh, and the black headliner showed up in the mail today.  :)

Making progress on my Weber 32/36 1bbl aircleaner mod.

I still need to create a vent tube into the primary barrel from the valve cover vent nipple.

The rubber cushion on the underside of the inlet lands on top of the fuel pump as the factory intended.

I sent the vin # to the archive that was on the block that came out of the donor car I bought and this is what came back. Pretty interesting! This is a vin correct?

The BMW 1800 VIN 1278464 was manufactured on July 08th, 1966 and delivered on July 13th, 1966 to the BMW dealer Kummer in Augsburg. The original colour was Bristol, paint code 058.

That's a casting # probably. The VIN should be stamped into the usual place where the starter motor is fitted.

This engine block was cast March 14, 1984 (“16C84” in an oval frame). VIN’s are stamped into the block, on the flat boss at the rear of the block, just above the nose of the starter. The seven numbers you’re referring to, 1278464, are casting numbers (cast into the block), and they are generally indecipherable to us, although occasionally they may be similar to a part number.

The external ribbing on the lower end of the block is also a characteristic of post-‘02 M10 blocks. Compare with, below, an April 11, 1972 block (“11D” within an oval frame and “72” just above that frame) from 1972 tii.

Regards,

Steve

Nah- the newer blocks are supposed to be better, lighter, stiffer, some crap like that.

And be honest, Steve doesn't care if you got the wrong number, he's just happy to have another data point, no?  Win all the way around.  :)

And if you Google “BMW engine 1278464”, you’ll find that it is a 1.8-liter block from an e30.

Hey!

Welded a new panel into the left rear side of the car. Will be doing the last patches ever to the car coming week(s) after doing body work for nearly half a year now. Which means finishing the body and getting her ready for the media blaster. This is my first car (and first time working on sheet metal) ever so I can't complain!

I'm very pleased with the construction I bought from a friend, if anyone might be interested the company is called HMD creations stationed in Holland.

It allows me (gaining a bit more height) to rotate the car a 360 degrees in the air, how great ?

if anyone's interested in my restoration, here's my blog:

it would be of great honour if somebody'd take a look at it! Advice would also be highly welcomed.

Going for the m20 :D

Keep you updated,

cheers JP

Happy Thanksgiving! I went out and looked at the car, resigned to the fact I’m not going to touch it today...

Eating, drinking, and football (with a little walk so I can eat some more) is the order of the. I hope you all have a great day, whatever you do.

Finally got the COP kit installed.  Cleaned up the engine bay very nicely.  Now I need to repaint the apron from the scratches the coil pack made.
